Best Solvent to Flush Filings Out of Gear Case?

Hello again,

I posted a while back about a problem with my Mercury 15hp lower unit, that I had stripped the threading on the vent screw and needed to re-tap the hole. To deal with the problem of aluminum filings that no doubt got into the gear case, most people advised me to flush it out with solvent.

So, what type of solvent should I use? I was advised against using gasoline or anything else that might damage the seals and bearings in there. Obviously water is not an option. What can I use?

Thanks,

Jack

Thin vegetable oil will work.
