Best Gearbox for a Ford 1.8XLD Engine ?

We are fitting out our Ganley Shadow 34 for long distance sailing.

I have 2 gearboxes in my possession: A PRM 120 and a PRM 150.

PRM 120 is a mechanical gearbox rated for pleasure craft only.
PRM150 is a hydraulic gearbox, which is rated for commercial use. The hydraulic gearbox has 2 hydraulic clutches in it and transmits more power, as well as handling both a left hand and right hand prop.

I am trying to weigh up the best one to fit whether simpler or sophisticated is better.

Your expert thoughts. Please.

Indiana, I have always found Mike Belamy and his staff at Lancing very helpful even when I wasn't buying anything from them and that includes speaking with the boss for an hour on a bank holiday

Give them a ring.

Welcome to Lancing Marine

Pete

G'day Indiana-ct,

There are quite a few PRMs in my area that give very good reliable service, the hyd units have the advantage of being very easy & quick to knock down for any internal work , the hyd units are alot more robust internally. Both boxes can be free wheeled when sailing or anchored in current without causing problems.

Cheers, Shakey.

Maybe more important is the reduction gearing on these gear boxes.
a) they must suit the engine's power curve, and :-
b) they must suit the diameter and pitch of the propeller.
