But I plan to find myself a couple of hundred miles off shore soon and I really want to trust the engine in my boat for that sort of travel.
Yeah. I am a bit torn, but I'm leaning towards the beta with a 5 year warranty.
Still waiting to hear back from the nanni dealer though before we decide

Crossing my fingers for you that they can come up with a good price.

I assume you will install it yourself?

We are going to have to extend our budget 2 or 3k.
Looking at doing a bit of the work ourselves....but may need to seek a mechanic to get mounts aligned properly to the shaft.

What? Exceeding your original budget by LESS than 100%!?

You are doing VERY well.

Re: Best engine under $10k

We traded out our old Yanmar 3GMD for a Beta25 and never looked back. It was about $11K USD in 2012 but it's been awesome. Reliability and ease of maintenance are outstanding. Smoother and quieter than the Yanmar. Had a couple of minor issues with the oil pressure gauge and the coolant cap but those were quickly resolved at ZERO cost.

Being basically a marinized Kubota, parts (so far just filters) are available at the local tractor dealer for a fraction of Yanmar prices.

Whatever you do, don't skimp when it comes to the engine - unless you enjoy working on it at the most inconvenient of times..

We currently have an old Yanmar, but it is getting a bit past it.
I'd like something around 40 to 50hp, has to be quiet and I'd like it to be under $10k Australian.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks
There is nothing better than a Yanmar in my opinion, 20 years and 6100 hours later with much abuse, on my current Yanmar 50 4jhe. And 8500 + hours on my old 35 hp, both running, no oil burn and plenty of power, never left me stranded motors!
Easy to fix and get parts, See if you can rebuild, I would not have any other motor in my boat

Re: Best engine under $10k

Having to change engine I would go with a Perkin.
All the coolers are external and in brass. Not those cheap allu alloy exchangers.
Make you wonder how those neeners couldn't figure that allu and salt water didn't mix well. A Volvo you must be joking, To much electronic. A diesel is simple.

Ummmm.... 135 HP in a 30 foot Halvorsen would be kinda silly. Make for an impressive bow wave, and probably an even more impressive fuel bill.

Are they really brass???
Brass and seawater don't play well.
Perhaps bronze or better yet, cupronickel. AFAIK, Yanmar uses cupronickel.

Re: Best engine under $10k

So we've bought a Beta 35. Has been shipped friday....should be here early next week.
On a side note....the old girl is getting some fresh paint. Must have been 8 layers of paint on there at least! Almost ready for primer.
Have some repairs to do first to the hull.Click image for larger version

Re: Best engine under $10k

You'll be REALLY happy with the Beta. Maintenance is a joy. You'll actually look forward to your first oil change. If you can get a cup or pan under the tranny, even changing that oil is a breeze. Filters are right up front - and you can buy them at the local tractor supply for a fraction of Yammy stuff. You should be able to get a Kubota parts cross list from your dealer. If not, I have a short list of the parts you'll need.

If it turns out you need to change orientation for the throttle or shifter, they make the parts and they are relatively inexpensive. I think the bellcrank for the throttle was $60 USD from Beta - even painted to match.
