belt breaking

I have a Yanmar 51 horse. I shreaded a belt to the water pump and alternator in November on a trip from Virginia to St. Martin. Only sign of problem was engine overheating. No noise no smell. Changed the belt with no trouble. Checked the belts before the return trip, OK.
On trip back broke the same belt, replaced and did well, checked a couple of times, OK. There are 4 other belts in front of the broken one. Belts are close but not touching.
What is the likely cause that I can check into?

Does it have a hi amp alternator on it?

+ or too much tension or a poor quality belt, buy Gates.

Was Gates belt from NAPA

tension was good by my judgement, no sound, seems to be aligned and all belt running along side each other.

low (80) amp alternator on belt, high amp 160 on other belt.

Main reasons for belt wear:
Misalignment. (Use straight edge)
Corroded Pulleys. (Abrasive)
Overloaded power. (Bigger Alternator same belt)
Incorrect tension. (too tight = heat, too loose = heat)

Water pump beginning to sieze?

Take the belt off and feel all around the pully groove. I have seen a mark like someone used a pry bar to tighten the belt and nicked the pulley. Turned it into a shredder but it was hard to find. Pulled my hair out checking alignment and everything else.
