Beep then Beep then Beep

Hi Guys,
I did a search but I think my bad computer skills have let me down.
Its a Volvo D2-40 2006-7 model with about 800 hours or so and I've already replaced the sail drive diaphram, heat exchanger, thermostat, exhaust elbow, water pump x 2, water lock box ( due to engine fire) and all the gear box oil seals, thanks to the ever carefull service technician.
Now the starter panel beeps once every 10 seconds or so at low revs. I think its a low charging alarm from the alternator but after reading the scant engine fault info , I cant really find a answer. It runs fine and I dont hear any alarms at higher revs.
So the question is has anyone had similar issues and what seems the best and easiest solution?
I hate intermittant faults.
Derek

I'd be more worried about a low oil pressure alarm

Did you put a new alternator on it?

Maybe the guys at the Volvo Shop at Marmong Point could tell you what the "beep" is.

Hi colemj, I havent put a new alternator on yet as Im still paying for the last service. I was hoping someone might have found an easy solution for the beep.

donradcliffe, I have noticed the battery symbol flash so I was thinking alternator not oil.

Ann T. Cate, Yeh great, last month cost me $6000 for the service which only included the Diaphram and it still leaks oil from the waterpump after being attempted twice. They said last year," never replaced a water pump on your model as they are to new" and last month they said " we've done hundreds of those waterpumps not a problem" yeah it still leaks oil.

Oh, dear,

I'm really sorry. We've been in there, mostly to "howdy", had no idea they were such crooks. Forgive me for the suggestion.

So sorry for all the troubles. It's one reason Jim wouldn't have a volvo on his boat: for him it was a deal breaker.

Thanks Ann,
They try you know, I think they are very trying!
Last motor was a Yanmar and I went through 4 in a year so I thought, well it could be me! I was going to ask Bruce but he is getting ready for Tassie and seems busy.

I was thinking that it might just need a good blow out with a air gun or something simple. There does seem to be a lot of dust/dirt around the alternator. Do you need to renew any of the brushes or whatever in a alternator?

May need new brushes but the dust could also be from a slipping belt.

Hi Deepfrz,
So it looks like a trip to the auto electrician then. The belt has been replaced at service and then again by me less than 1/2" up down movement and its a multiV type belt $38 each. Yeh it could be belt dust. Do they have brushes that a simpleton like me can replace?

How does a water pump leak oil?

Hi MarkSF,
Volvo D2-40 waterpumps are mechanically driven and have a housing through which it is mounted and the seals are those rubber O rings and one is hidden and can only be replaced if the front of the engine gasket is replaced, or in other words its a design flaw, I think. Thank god the alternator isnt mounted with similar ideas.

As soon as I up the revs slightly the beep stops but its a pain when bring up the anchor as the admiral tries to move the ship and dosent understand that she should move it back to gear and then try to move forward.

Sometimes after a good run it will idle away without the alarm so I was hoping for the easy fix. I am a lazy bugger .

Re: Beep then Beep then Beep

Do you have an external regulator, or just the stock Volvo internally regulated alternator? Are your batteries fully charged when this happens? Does the alternator charge the batteries, and at what voltage? Are you using the Volvo "charge controller" or whatever they call their diode splitter?

Also, is your idle speed set correctly?

The D-series have issues with charging and beeping under certain conditions. They have a computer-control that doesn't handle certain things well.

Hi Mark,
We have the standard Volvo alternator and our yacht lives in a marina. We have a two hundred watt solar panel to charge the batteries as the marina has too much hot water to be plugged in all the time, so the batteries are always fully charged.
My little voltmeter reads 14.5v at 1200 - 1500 rpm at the batteries, 1 for house 200 ah and 1 for start 90ah.
Idle speed shows as 850rpm.
As previous post I think its a trip to the electrican unless someone has had similar beep and found a easy fix.

Maybe the idle speed is set to low.

Re: Beep then Beep then Beep

Derek,
Maybe you already have this, it sure scarce on details and Volvo don't make it easy to identify what your alarm is.
Have you tried creating the alarm at night to see if one of your warning lamps is constantly on? Sometimes they can be invisible or appear intermittent in daylight.
Cheers,
Mac
It's also for the D2-40...
