Inboard versions are used in jetskis and snowmobiles.

Re: Atomic Four .......Could You?

Just wondering... do you get many jet ski engines with 6000 or more hours on them?

Pretty common with those stinky, noisy, vibrating, heavy ol' diesels.

Cheers,

Jim

I seriously doubt most of them make it to 500

Re: Atomic Four .......Could You?

I dont think Rotax makes an inboard suitable for a 12000 lb cruising boat. They may in the future, but not to my knowledge yet. Rotax makes good engines, but like all engines they should be used for what they are designed for. Just my 2 cents worth.____Grant.

Because most of them are running at 8,000 rpm all day long,
and are making about 30 times as much horsepower.

This is impossible for a diesel. But just becaues they are vastly superior here does not mean they do not work at lower rpm.

Re: Atomic Four .......Could You?

They use Rotax engines in light weight aircraft. The ones I was around needed ovhl at about 400 hours. I think the recommended TBO was more like 250.

To be clear, there are no 2 stroke inboards made for sailboats?

Big corporations create products to meet a demand. And I've pointed out, sailboat owners all have a fetish for diesel engines.
Even the catamaran guys who fuss over foam weight want diesel engines.

But you can get direct injected two stroke outboard motors for sailboats.

Re: Atomic Four .......Could You?

Two things. There is, or was a 2 stroke inboard built in England. The Vire. I think it was 5 or 6 HP,( It was about like a converted British Seagull) I doubt that it is still made. The other thing is that in general, outboards, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, electric, propane, are a PITA unless you only sail in calm waters. I have flown behind a Rotax,(4 stroke) and it was smooth and powerfull, but as has been stated, they are rebuilt at regular intervals. Not yet ready for prime time.____Grant.

Nimble, seems like the diesels that you don't like are actually well suited to the role of auxiliary power in displacement yachts. High speed two strokes are not well suited. Why would I want one? Saving a couple of hundred pounds in exchange for a short lived sceamer isn't a good trade IMO.

Re: Atomic Four .......Could You?

I was on a rented Irwin 34 with an Atomic 4 last weekend. I could smell gasoline in the middle of the night and a paper towel wiped under the carburetor the next morning showed gasoline stains with strong gasoline odor. Need to rebuild that carburetor or at least replace the float valve. Also noted an RPM drop for the same throttle setting toward the end of the next day. I did not note any blue smoke from burning oil if there were bad rings. Not sure if water muffler takes any smoke out of the exhaust. However, the RPM drop indicates a bad sparkplug or perhaps loss of compression. Oil fouling could account for the bad sparkplug. The alternator, starter and ignition system and backfire arrestor are special equipment that are not supposed to be a source of ignition; however, we did vent the engine compartment ten minutes before starting. Here in Wisconsin, premium gasoline does not have alcohol and that means much better aging characteristics. Gasoline with alcohol goes stale in about three months while gas without alcohol with fuel stabilizer can go a year. Hard starting on an A4 could be stale gasoline.

Re: Atomic Four .......Could You?

DANGER. thats all i can think when i hear gasoline and boat. unless its an outboard... a few vapors, a spark... bang, no more crabs. diesel is hard to burn.
now consider this...
you could repower. a used diesel engine would be cheap.
