Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

We have Naiad Stabilizers on our boat and we are not getting any oil pressure readings. Are trying to troubleshoot to locate the problem and what will need to be done to get the things working. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Is the oil tank full? Is the hydraulic pump on? It may have an electric magnetic clutch.

Meridian28, Oil tank is full, the pump is directdrive off the crank shaft, no magnetic clutch. We are not getting readings on any of the gauges, oil or gyro pressure. We can find no oil leaks, but we have lost a little along, not in bilge.

You might try cracking a fitting to see if there is any pressure at the pump

Is the reverse solenoid engaged? The one that centers the stabilizers when going astern?

Re: Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

We don't have solenoids for locking in place. We have found out it is supposed to be a Vane pump instead of a hydraulic pump and there may be a vacuum from loosing a little bit of oil. We think there might be a pinhole in the heat exchanger that is allowing the small amount of oil that we are loosing to seep thru and go out thru the raw water theu the exhaust hose for the motor. So hopefully we can verify tomorrow that we need to more or less burp the pump and get the gauges to show us they are working, then to replace to heat exchanger.

Call Naiad talk to a tech. If necessary hire a tech to checkout your system.

Re: Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

We have been talking to the owner of the business that actually installed this system on our boat for PO, 2 before us. He is trying to help as much as possible thru phone contact. We are trying to pinpoint the problem, before sinking multiple $$$. Thanks for all the help

Re: Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

I have had a few boats with Niad stabilizers and I believe if you have fluid and the pump is turning then the problem is either in the controls or a bypass valve. A small leak is not going to allow enough air to airlock the pump. And unless it is at the top of the system it would fill when shut down.

If you have replaced the filter and still have the old filter, cut it apart and look inside to see what is in it. Dirt is the main cause of hydraulic malfunction.

Is there any noise? Hydraulics are noisy and a cavitating pump or a working bypass valve should be squealing. If no pressure and no noise the fluid is likely flowing freely through the bypass valve with no pressure or restrictions.

Again, check the controls and gyro, if no signal to the valves, it simply free flows.

Re: Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

Michael, we have now narrowed down to an electrical issue. Thru talking to the stabilized marine owner, he explained how to bypass the control switches to see if the pump would engage and give us pressure readings on the gauges and we did. Tomorrow start trying to trace the electrical issue from the switch on the lower helm. Thanks for your suggestions! Maybe now we can get to the issue

I have the same issue with my Naiad 252. No pressure on either hydraulic or gyro dials. I am getting voltage to the lower solenoid (27V on a 24V system) of the Vickers hydraulic valve and can hear it 'click' but no pressure! I cracked the pump supply line and there is fluid flowing, just not pressurised. I expect the bypass valve is staying engaged for some reason?

Any advice on how to manually bypass would be appreciated. I tried inserting screwdriver into each side of the solenoid to force the poppet but no joy.

Re: Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

If you have this type of solenoid, there is a button on the top and bottom. Push down or up. One way will center the fins the other will activate themClick image for larger version

Re: Anyone know about Naiad Stabilizers?

Did you push hard enough that it went in all the way?
