9.9Hp Yamaha Outboard does not stop...

Hi,

I have a 1997 Yamaha 9.9Hp on my cat.
It runs well, but recently fails to stop when I turn the ignition key to the stop position.
Need to disconnect the fuelhose to eventually let it stop by a lack of fuel.

Any thoughts?
Would like to avoid replacing the ignition key.

Thanks in advance,

Franziska

Check the connections from the ignition switch to ground. Typically when you turn off small engines it grounds out the ignition circuit so no more electricity flows to the plugs. Check for a loose or disconnected wire to begin with.

Plus check for corrosion on the ground connections.

Just out of curiousity why do you want to avoid replacing the ignition if that ends up being what it is?

Thanks! Will look at those once at the boat.

@On the rocks.

If that is what it is I would first try to fix it before throwing something away and buy new.
Less waste, less cost.
I do not like the unfortunately common throw away mentality.

😀

Pulling the choke out should stop the engine.

You would take a switch apart and try to fix it? Sometimes, replacement is simpler, less expensive and more reliable than trying to fix something. Small switches are not typically designed to be taken apart, repaired and put back together again.

How many of your hours would you spend trying to repair a $10 part?

I would open it if it's easy & see if it can be easily fixed.
If not,get a new one, of course.
