'79 Volvo 17c Impeller Replacement

I want to replace the sea water impeller and was wondering if I pull the whole unit out, for ease of access, will oil come pouring out? Or should I just pull the cover off in place? thanks

Just pull off the cover. Flat plate with 6 screws if I recall. Pull the impeller out of the housing. May be tight. If tough to pull the impeller you might use two screwdrivers to lever it out. Be careful not to damage the sides where the plate mates onto the housing or it will leak. I would wrap tape around the screwdrive shaft where it met the housing to cushion the surface.

You can just pull the cover and replace the impeller. As you have noticed the pump shaft goes into the engine cavity which means that if the seal behind the impeller goes, you can pump seawater into the sump. If my memory is still accurate (Its 20 years since I had to work on a Green Death) , you can drill a couple of drain holes in the pump casting to drain any water before it gets into the sump, but ask someone knowlegeable before doing the drilling. Regards, Richard.
