4JHE to 4JH3E w/ downangle gear

Is a Yanmar 4JH3E with a Kanzaki KM3A1 (7 degree down angle) gear an acceptable replacement for a 4JHE with a horizontal (non down angle)drive? From a previous thread, I know the engines are very close... But, what kind of problems will the down angle gear create during a repowering project. Thanks for your time!

You might experience benefits. The engine can be moved back on the shaft.
The engine will lay on a less, or no incline.
Dip stick readings will be more accurate.

But engine mounts may require greater modifications.

I suggest that you stay with the same gearbox type (no down angle) as this seemingly small change will make a repower a real pain in the a***.
The change needed to the engine beds to accommodate the down angle will cause you extra work and expense and headaches.

Thanks to everyone for the information and replies. I believe I will simplify the repower effort and stay with a parallel marine gear. Thanks again!
