4108 Engine timing

Just done resleeve and rings, head, diesel pump ,injectors, etc.Hard to start cold, runs fine at 1500/1600 rpm under load only, seems retarded, yet timing set as per workshop manual.Manual states that scribed line ( A ) inside outlet port should line up with end of circlip and that that is the point of injection, which should be 18 deg BTDC.But if you time the engine as per the manual, using the appropriate timing marks, that scribed line comes up at approx TDC.Any Ideas.I am limited to how far I can turn (advance ) the pump in place, will have to remove timing cover, so to get the motor to run properly the pump timing will not be as per the manual.Cam and crank timing is correct.
Cheers Russ.

don't know if this will help, and I've never had to mess with the injection timing on a perkins, but when I had that issue with my Yanmar I got a mechanic who showed up with a timing light that was fired by the hi preasure pulse on the #1 fuel line. It read the pulse through the line and putting the timing light on the timing mark then was easy. Good luck George

Thanks for your reply. At idle it puts out a grey smokey residue which I am told is unburnt diesel as well as a oily slick on the water surface. At 1500/1600 under load it is ok but grey smoke still present ,at 1800 + it puts out black soot .Doesnt rev out well under load.I am sure it is retarded ,but why is the manual wrong.Starts absolutely fine when warm.My main question is the timing of the point of injection of the diesel pump.Russ.
