Evan,

Defender has oem service manuals for Tohatsu/ Nissan 4 stroke outboard motors. Should be the same as the Mercury.

Re: 4 stroke - what to do different than with 2 stroke?

Tayana42 beat me to it--I'm pretty sure the Tohatsu and Mercury 4-stroke 6-HP motors are nearly identical, so you may be able to get a Tohatsu manual, and there is a Seloc manual that supposedly covers the entire line. And these folks might be useful for parts and such, though I have never used them. Tohatsu is the actual manufacturer.
