Has anyone had actual difficulty with getting their 4-stroke engine repaired or serviced outside of the USA? Specifically, when cruising in any of the smaller island nations or third world countries.

new 2 strokes by certain mfgs. are better at emmisions and fuel econ.than 4 strokes for 2 yrs now in the U.S. . you'll have to go on-line as i can't remem. which. bought a new 8 merc 4 stk. in 05 for new dink. thought i was inpressed, but very heavy fuel eco. not bad. but i quest. myself now had 6 evin. fisherman 1971 that ran all day on a gal. with new plugs and fuel pump. always started 1st/2nd pull never had prob. already have issues with merc. i don't like. the prime is a pain, have to take to dealer for p.m. and winterization, because of war. the pro is the power to use as tug if main propulsion on boat dies. don't get me wrong i like the motor pretty much, but hindsight is always 20/20

Outboards used to be cheaper in the Bahamas, than in S. Florida.
Notwithstanding, I would confirm pricing prior to setting off w/out an engine (expecting to save money offshore).

Gord, You need to go sailing, you have way to much time on your hands.

Chuck:
Notwithstanding the time I spend on CF – I have way TOO LITTLE time available.
Not only does my job overextend my abilities, and the time available to compensate, but (on the larger scale) I’m old enough to see the end of my time (here).
Otherwise, you're right ~ I need to go cruising

Gord,

Thanks for you 'well reasoned and insiteful' posts. You are always spot on, and I appreciate it.
