Google "Australia animal importation" and also add "private vessel" and other variations and you will find a massive government listing of laws, rules, and regulations about bringing animals (dogs) into the country. It is one of the two worst and most complicated places to get an animal/pet into via a private boat. New Zealand is the other. It will probably take you the "few years" to get everything in order and approved.

Sending them by plane is still expensive and complicated. I think they have to be in quarantine for a long time.

We emigrated to Oz 35 years back and at that time it was a 6 month quarantine period plus dogs having to have a vet provided clearance before they depart the UK.
It may well have changed in the period since but as others have said, Australia protects its flora and fauna more stingently than most others.
Good luck

I heard that if you sail there you cannot stop at rabies-infected areas along the way...or something like that...you must send the dog ahead. I.e. Indonesia, Malaysia, other Pacific Islands....
You'll need to check carefully with the Oz authorities to avoid a sad situation at quarantine...

We have very stringent laws as we are one big island. I think you will find that sailing them in is a no no. Long quarantine is still the way as far as I no but you will need to contact the authorities. The best piece of advice anyone will give you on this site is work with the authorities do not try and circumvent any rules or regulations and try to get everything in writing. While we Australians do get frustrated at times with our authorities we do have a great country without many of the animal diseases and pests etc that other countries are stuck with. Good luck

I had followed David in this link...he sent Mango home because of the dog policies in Australia. Even worse was Jamaica's, where you can be boarded and the dog shot. Sorry, probably better skip taking fido with you.

Because of our very uniquie fauna we cant take any chances on foreign diseases getting in. Aqis and customs take it all very seriously here, as you may have gathered.
My personal recommendation would be to send the dog ahead before you leave. It will have to spend a possible six months in quarantine and it may as well be while you are sailing over.
Bringing Cats and Dogs (and other pets) to Australia - DAFF This site will explain the rules, costs etc
Cheers

I would say it is best not to bring your pet to a place that really does not want them there. In our case we just cross off those countries as a destination as long as our dogs are alive. Plenty of other wonderful places out there that are more welcoming to our four legged friends

Hey it's not that we don't want your dog, its just that we dont want any of the diseases that may hitch a ride with them. Just follow the advice provided by DAFF and meet your dog here after quarintine, many others do it regularly. Cheers Rob

I will second that and add we dont need people with bad attitudes to common sense rules. That is why we advise tourists to swim between the flags but they ignore those rules as well and many go home dead every Summer.
