Large Dogs Aboard

One morning while anchored off the Chessapeak Bay, I was on deck, and saw a guy on about a 45' saliboat anchored near by, going around his deck with a shovel! A few minutes later, I saw the 2 large dogs he had aboard. At least they went above decks!!

I think the best idea I've seen for dogs it to have a piece of astro turf, on the foredeck attached to a line. Dog poops on it. Throw it overboard for a while.

Uh, isn't that the same thing as pumping your head directly overboard? Not allowed unless you're three miles out...I would think the same would apply to animal poop.

So are you saying that dog pee and poop can go directly overboard within the three-mile limit? I'm truly curious as we recently acquired a boat-pup. So far, she's doing her business at the marina yard, but eventually when we do some cruising trips, we're discussing what to do about dispensing with her eliminations.

As I understand it, the laws are about MSD's not their contents. Thus the ol' buck-it and chuck-it is not illegal.

Yes, you are correct. The same applies to the animals urine, which should not be washed overboard. I recommend following your dog around with a small cup whenever it's walking on deck, so that you can collect the urine when necessary. Then add it to your holding tank. Another good option is to make your pet wear a diaper.

I witnessed something truly horrific yesterday evening. I was standing on my back deck when a seagull flew overhead and had the nerve to crap in the water 10 feet behind my boat! I mean, it would have been ok if it had crapped on my head or on my deck, but in the water!! Then it just flew away completely oblivious to the damage it is perpetrating on our waterways!! I was aghast! Damn polluters

The legality would probably depend on whether you could get the astroturf classified as an "MSD" or not. Remember, the humans on your boat are allowed to purge directly overboard. Stick a bucket in between--and now you can't empty the bucket into the same place, because it is an MSD.

Logic is for mathematicians, not lawyers. Fortunately for the dogs.

Hard to belive but that sums it up about right. Animals don't get the short end of the stick this time. Regulation of animals just gets to be too difficult.

Great! It might surprise you how effective dog terds are for chumming the fish. Although I prefer to save my dog's arsenal for the jet skis that get too close.
