I had a Hamster ("Lennox" )..........they do escape. Very inventive little b#ggers, with lots of time on their hands ![]() But somehow we always caught the b#gger again

another no on the hamster here. besides the other issues mentioned already, they can sometimes be mean, biting, smelly little creatures. | |

Any pet is going to be a hassle if you ever want to spend a bit of time away from the boat.

You need to consider if a country is concerned about a non-native species infesting its environment.

I had three teddybear hamsters once. One day I had two. I looked all over for that hamster but found nothing. I couldnt even find how he got out. Several days later I had one. Looked again...again couldnt find an escape route, or a hamster. Finally I had none. Two days later I found the last hamster dead in my darkroom sink. He had jumped and committed suicide. When I cleaned out their cage I got the shock of my life. The cage was littered with bones. The last hamster had pulled a "Silence of the Lambs" on the other two. Still think they're cute?

Ok, get a couple of them long enough to tape 'em in a zero gravity situation during heavy weather. Then, if you keep them you will have a video you can watch on a friend's boat while the wiring and plumbing gets repaired. |

If you are going to have a rodent onboard, a rat would be make for a much heartier passenger.

Have never lived on a boat but have done the hamster thing (they are not particular to human kindness) and I too vote for keeping a rat if you must have a pet. When our Oscar escaped he would come when called, which makes the "chewing on vital wiring" factor much less of a stress. The other blessing with rats is that they are prone to tumors & cancer (go figure why they use them for research) and they don't live a very long time. Don't get me wrong, Oscar was a great pet and I cried like a baby when we had to have him put to sleep (due to tumors). |

Back in the 1970's my wife and I bought a hamster for a pet. The little guy was missing one day and we finally found him and put him back in the cage. A day or so later I was getting my photo equipment (strobe with separate battery pack) and found that the little bugger (cute as could be) had chewed into the VERY expensive cord between the battery and strobe. Didn't have much money then and it was painful to replace the cord. We went from one small pet to five kids - go figure. Robert |
