Your most embarrassing incident at sea

What has been your Your most embarrassing incident at sea?

Mine was when I was on board my 60 foot planing power boat powering along at 26 knots when myself and my crew observed a smallish yacht in the distance off toy our starboard side with a group of people on the bow and some smoke coming up from the bow.

We looked through the binoculars and sure enough there was a chap clearly signaling to us by bringing his arms up and splaying them out is the signal you can give for a Mayday when you have no radio - and sure enough there were about 10 people all crowded around him.

It was clear they were on fire and need help so we changed course and rapidly approached them in what we thought would be a rescue attempt.

We were approaching them at some speed an when we were about 100 yards or so away and just beginning the final turn to bring us alongside their bow, a guest on board my boat screamed at me to turn away and leave them alone - it was a commanding scream from a sensible official of our sailing club so I turned way - he then shouted that he realised it was a sailing boat from the club who was spreading the ashes of a chap who had requested his ashes be spread at sea - the gathering on the bow was the funeral party and the raised and lowering of arms was the spreading action and of course you have guessed it the ashes were the smoke.

As we sped away it was embarrassing to look back to see that little boat rocking all over the place in our wake with 10 pairs of eyes staring at us in horror as they held on tight.......
