I am surprised no one has mentioned Windpilot , they have many pics of cats with their windvane attached .

Upon reading the fine print in the Windpilot web site - there is tacit agreement that they don't work in gusty conditions. So it was back to the photo for just another peek to confirm that it was obviously not a cold day when it was taken

Searunners are designed for vane steering. I built my rudder with a trailing edge that will hold a 3" trim tab in the aft radius. Many builders have opted for the Auto-Helm (http://www.selfsteer.com/products/autohelm/index.php. I haven't purchased it yet, but it is on my list of desired gear for cruising. Several friends have used it with great success. It is reefable and durable. The Searunner rudder steering arm has a device that allow the rudder to "free-wheel" independent of the steering cable, when on windvane self steering.
