Lopez, Watmough. You're anchored in my favorite spot after Juan de Fuca transit.

Re: Why don't people anchor closer to shore

When you say 30-50m, which way is the wind blowing? If you have 20m of chain out but the wind is blowing offshore, if it turns you have -10 to 10m to shore (approx).

For a day stop where we will be right there and can take immediate action, we sometimes move in closer. For overnight or if we will be away from the boat, we tend to stay further out to account for windshifts or dragging.

Bugs aren't a big issue if you have screens.

That's what we're talking about. Although I think you cheated here on this one. Looks like you let it dry out ?

Thanks all, I'll be the one hogging the prime spots. So don't complain to me!

Re: Why don't people anchor closer to shore

I am no Cat owner, but i have noticed a sort of herding mentality when it comes to anchoring by boaters, you could have a perfect anchor the size of a city block, beach just as good etc, everything the same, and they will all group up together.
Plus there seem to be "official" anchorages. People will anchor on a lee shore in strong wind and get beat up by waves and endanger the boat, where they could motor a half mile across the bay and tuck in and be out of all of that, but they don't, cause that is not the side of the bay you anchor at.
I'm sort of anti social and like to be off by myself and that is why I have noticed it.

Maybe this herding mentality sometimes overcomes logic, cause if my draft were only a couple of feet, I'd likely anchor a lot closer to the beach at times, and maybe move later if security, bugs etc dictated it.

Then its up to you to move.

You can't be the Anchorage Nazi and claim half the bay because you were there first and you like to be by yourself. That just doesn't work. As long as you gave swing room its safe. So if you want a vacant area its up to you to move each time you feel someone is too close for your individual comfort.

Re: Why don't people anchor closer to shore

Changing wind has come up a lot in this thread. However its not necessarily a problem in all anchorage, but may be in some. Obviously local knowledge is extremely important.

I can SAFELY park as close to the beach as depth allows for 6 months at a time. Why? Local conditions. There is no chance of a wind from any direction except NE to SE, basically all year except for hurricanes.

Cruising means visiting new areas, we need to learn the local conditions, and have contingencies factored in.

Or, to be by yourself, play loud bluegrass (banjo) music or rap on your stereo when you see another boat coming into the anchorage. Walk around on your bow in a speedo or even naked when you see people approaching. Pee or poop off the bow.

Seriously though, if someone is looking for a good place to anchor and sees a boat already anchored, they figure this must be a good place to anchor. It's human nature.

I would have thought that everyone would make sure their swinging circle would not take them closer to shore than their draft would allow.

Re: Why don't people anchor closer to shore

If it is an empty cove and you have a protected anchorage....get in close if its during the day and wind, tides and currents are in your favor and holding ground is good. If you are going to shore make sure you have some dragging room and swinging room...

if you are anchoring overnight... find the safest most forgiving spot in case Murphy shows up.

BUGS! In general, the further off the beach you are the less bugs you get.

NOISE! It's quieter out there.
