Or it could be that they were charterers, and at best weren't familiar with the boat, or at worst, had no idea whatsoever what they were doing, or that the boat, equipped for charter, had the cheapest sails available on it... etc.etc.etc...

But anyway, you'd expect any awesome windward monohull sailing machine to crush any cat on a windward sail right? That's a given isn't it? So what's the big deal?

I thought you were dissing monohulls? Now you agree they sail better more than half the time.

How am I expected to find the answer If I don't ask the question? No "stirring" going on here if you read my posts, 'just wanted to get some quality answers before possibly beginning the buying search for a Sunreef.

'Nothing more to it.

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

I don't diss monohulls. This thread however...

Yeah they sail fantastic. Better than any cat ever will. (The AC 72's only managed VMG's of 18+ knots...) Love to see how they'd go with their engines off though. Maybe someday one of them will run out of fuel...

More than half the time? If you spend that much time sailing to windward, it might be an idea to spend a little longer looking at weather forecasts.

We can sail to windward OK (you know, for a cat). But I still prefer reaching or running.

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

Can anyone tell me about sailing experiences aboard a Sunreef 62? How do they sail? I'm not looking for high performance, I just don't want a brick.

I'm really more attracted to the additional real estate and the view from the living room while at anchor. Plus, it kinda looks like our boat with two hulls and a third story deck.

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

I just read this whole thread, what a waste of time. If you have a boat and use it as you want, it's no one else's business how or why. Look to yourself on ownership and use.

A constructive answer/contribution would be more appreciated. The same for SimonV.

Thanks

Er.. book an appointment Ken. First I will check your eyesight and then move on to cognitive skills......................

Its NOTHING like your boat. Its a huge piece of acreage that will teach you that pockets are not for keeping money in. The cost of a lift out alone will feel like 1/10th of the national debt.

I do like it, just not any of the costs associated with it......

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

Weavis,

We lift our boat out once per year to place it on the hard for six months. The cost to do the same thing with the Sunreef will still be less money than it was to keep our 45ft Hunter at a slip in California for a year when taxes and everything else is considered.

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

We have a 36' Richard Woods cat here in the southern Philippines which we do some chartering and personal sailing/Island hopping with. We have a 50hp 4 stroke yamaha outboard. My basic policy is if we can make 3kts we sail if not then motor sail depending on the wind direction and our time schedule. Now she will only point about 40 degrees to weather but does well in light winds. Of course I would prefer to sail as that is the whole point in building her but some times you need to power up. My other policy here in the PI because of such challenging sailing and anchoring is to always be at my anchorage by 4pm so if it is not good I have time for a back up plan...........................

No offense was intended. Our point is that the whole premise/question here is based on a very false assumption (just like the tongue-in-cheek question in our post) and thus inherently incapable of a constructive response.

We now (again...and finally!) withdraw.
Actually, it was a little offensive. You need to work on your sense of humour and your tactics for retaliation when confronted about something. You didnt shine bright in the funny posts section.

What I find amusing and quite refreshing is that you dont mind losing customers...... way to go!

Now that was both informative and amusing......

It looks like monohulls and cats sail or motor for a variety of reasons. I think we have established that charters have a schedule restraint and thus stick the foot down, and some are lazy and dont bother with putting up the cloth, others motorsail.......

I love the Med but hate the weather patterns. Always seems to blowing the wrong way when Im in a hurry.......

such is life.
