Who is Toyota, Lexus, Mercedes, Ferrari Equivalents?

Hello all,

As you can see from this being my first post I am knew, not only to these forums but to the world of sailing.

So I have been reading and reading and going from manufacturer web site to site but I can't figure out who is who.

Is there a break down on manufacturers to equate them to car companies?

Thanks and have fun with this.

Privilege is the Mercedes or, as I prefer it, the Jaguar (solid, lots of wood) Gunboat is the Ferrari, Catana the BMW.

Can't think of the Lexus or Toyota. Can think of the Ford and Daewoo but I'm not going to name them as I've upset enough owners already this month.

Isn't a Lexus just a Toyota with a different badge, some leather, and an extra $20K in cost?

I'll nominate Gemini as the Toyota. They are small and economical to buy and run. Seawind and Outremer tied for Lexus. Better fit than most cats and reasonable performance. I'm talking about the new Out 49 which is not the rocket ship that the earlier boats were. The earlier Outies were Vipers! Raw power no amenities, not even cruise control. The 5x might be Viperesque again.

Manson is the Toyota - always reliable, sells what it advertises.

Rocna is the Yugo - metal isn't what advertised, bends on demand.

Oooopsss... this is not an anchor thread

Hey!....I own a 2011 Mini Cooper S. Now I am bent out of shape!

Just kidding.

Yeah, let's not bash anyone's brand of catamaran by calling it a Yugo or Dacia or whatever. People can get pretty sensitive about having their boats ridiculed.

As I've said here before, while sitting in some remote island in the South Pacific talking with fellow cruisers from around the world, no one ever listed boats in such a fashion. They all require maintenance, have breakdowns and require repairs.

Rather, one major topic of discussion was how well-suited their boat was for the specific cruising they planned, e.g., antarctic, island-hoping, speed vs, stability, storage and space priorities, etc...

My suggestion is you forget the brand name and consider what you want a boat for. You will be far better served once you determine your needs rather than try to come up with a list based solely on price, metaphor to cars, etc.

You don't want an AC Cobra to do trips to the grocery store or transit Alaska.

Thanks S/V Illusion. I have been considering those very issues. However builder web sites don't give those details, not that I can find. They state they are blue water/passage able.

So instead of manufacturer comparison I should be asking capability comparison. Say, economic city cruiser vs motor-home RV vs HUMVEE?

The car thing is stuck in me. I guess from the old and not necessarily true saying "It's the Cadillac of ...(insert item), catamaran in this case.

As for what Capabilities I am looking for:
Cruising from Alaska to Hawaii to California and beyond if so desired.

Thanks again.

I think most of the modern Lagoons are similar to RVs. And I mean that in a good way. Compare the L440s or L500s amount of room to most and they got the competition beat, hands down. And like most RVs (or caravans) they got the power to get the job done.
