Who Did/Does Own a Wharram

Renewing a life long fascination with Cats, I'm looking for opinions from people who have actually owned/ own or have lived/cruised on a Wharram long term.

I'm very much a do it myself kind of person, and they really appeal on the simplicity and maintenance side of things.

What are the good and bad points of them.

A bit of info on your circumstances during ownership would help as well i.e solo, family, cruising area etc.

Many thanks

Boatsmith who contributes on this forum has built 3 of them and currently owns a beautiful Tiki 30 that is for sale.

I built a 23' Hinemoa in the 70s. Used WEST and dynel cloth which was hard to work with. Sailed her from Galveston to Miami. No dink. Put her on the beach to run ashore tide willing, or anchored in inches when need be. Only complaint was wished I'd built a bigger one for the room, and it was not easy to tack; many times I jibed her around. And here, I must admit, I built the boat 6" wider than plans. May have made all the difference.

Since then, have dreamed of the 31' I think it is, but I'm too old to start a project like that. My mate at the time was young and buxom and generally topfree, much to the delight of many a fellow cruiser.

I think if a cruising gal has world class hooters, it is incumbent on her to share the wealth a little, if you get my drift.

I think it's mandatory on a Wharram

Re: Who Did/Does Own a Wharram

hello all,i am new to this forum but am presently building a wharram tiki 26.i have not done this kind of thing before but the plans are pretty clear and so far the build has been an absolute pleasure.i catch myself looking at the first completed hull thinking bloody hell i built that.i am not especially handy on the tools but after a while it gets easier.the fact that i will be able to do all the work on the boat ie repairs and maintenance is a big plus in my book.

They seem like sound boats, once you get over the notion that they are -- literally - tied together. If I were going to do the "cat" thing, I'd be seriously inclined to build a Tiki 30.

I believe they have proved themselves as a good seaworthy boat, but they do lack accomodation.
They look great but need to be over 40 ft to be anything like practical

Re: Who Did/Does Own a Wharram

Great sea boats! Our first boat was a tiki 30, built in Tonga and sailed to PNG where she still lives. The feeling of launching and sailing something you created is truly satisfying. I also had the utmost confidence in the strength and quality of the construction and was certain that I could repair or rebuild anything associated with the hulls as I had already done it once. Accommodation is basic but more than adequate for short coastal trips (I admit that 10 days at sea from Vanuatu to PNG was about as long as I would wish in one hop). We added the deck pod option and raised the mast height to accommodate a bimini as the extra sun protection in the tropics was essential for us.
Regards
Gary
