What's the Best Anchor for a 60 Foot Cat?

Hello everyone;

After reading all the horror stories about failing anchors on cats, I wanted to ask the obvious question : What's the best anchor for a catamaran? The size is 60-65 feet. I'm thinking of a Manson Supreme but not sure about the weight...

In addition, what solution do you suggest for additional anchoring (second bow anchor, stern anchor, sentinel etc.)? Looking forward for your answers, and yes, this question may have come before but it doesn't hurt to ask for a specific size, does it?

Best Regards;

Mehmet,

You're on the right track with your choice of a modern design anchor. The anchor's weight depends a lot on your cat's weight and windage - up it by one category of your chosen anchor's selection. Also remember to install a bridle with very flexible rope in order to absorb the increased holding power of the modern design anchor.

Most people advise on an aluminium anchor as a stern anchor - makes rowing it out easier!

Cat's have lots of windage, probably 50% more than an equivalent length monohull. On my 35' Packet Cat I used a 55# Rocna and never thought it was too big. I would use at least a 75# on your 60'.

What size do you suggest for 33000 lbs? And for line and chain?

And of course -if we're talking about Manson Supreme-, I have my doubts with stainless steel (yes, I'm a bit old fashioned!), how about galvanization?

Re: What's the best anchor for a 60 feet cat?

On my Privilege 39 I use a 70 pound Beugel anchor with 3/8 inch high test chain - 200 feet.

One of my friends on a 51 foot catamaran uses a 100 pound Beugel.

I like my Beugel a great deal.

What's the best anchor..........this is relegion and should not be allowed on the forum!!!

but seriously, the "Best" anchor is the one that allows you to sleep at night. If it needs to be the newest design on the market 3X the size recomended for your boat for you to sleep comfortabally, so be it. If you only feel comfortable with your boat tied to a rock on the bottom......well then that's the best anchor.

Just got a 80lb Manson Supreme on Ebay. $740 bucks plus 65 shipping. Better than Defender. He has a few of these, do a search.

Re: What's the best anchor for a 60 feet cat?

Hello Dave;

I've just had the chance to watch "exit only" on anchor with 50 knots of wind at Red Sea, on youtube. That show was more than extraordinary to speak about the performance of the Beugel. (Looking forward for the 5th episode by the way!). On the other hand, it looks quite, how can I put this, scary... Too sharp and thinking of a loose chain or etc., makes me sweat! Anyways, what side would you recommend for a 60 footer? 150? More?

M.

Wouldn't redundancy be the best solution? Two is better than one. Dave how often would you use two anchors?

Re: What's the best anchor for a 60 feet cat?

Not to be rude, but there are a lot of threads existing that would take hours to read, and would provide an excellent education in anchoring, that might have been read first. So in addition to this thread look around.

My own take is that the Manson Supreme, Rocna, Beugel, and Spade are all in a category well above the older designs, and have been around long enough to prove themselves. The Ultra is a relatively new entrant but shares design concepts with these, and would be a good choice as well. Unfortunately it is only available in stainless steel (OK, it would be eye-catching on the bow...).

I am guessing that yours is a Turkish name, and perhaps you will visit Turkey before going cruising? You can get Beugel copies (and originals) at a good price there. Also the Ultra anchors are made there. Either would make a great souvenir - too bad about the increasingly restrictive baggage allowances. I would use just about any excuse to go back to Turkey...

Re: What's the best anchor for a 60 feet cat?

I would also consider a Fortress, it’s got a great reputation and will not weigh down your cats bow-something to think about if your ever in really big seas- I believe its holding strength is as good or better than Manson(I also own),- Roca or- Spade(I also own), In my experience Fortress has the best warranty of all the anchors, I just got a brand new one as a replacement for the old one I abused and miss used, the factory said not a problem !
Here is the picture of the old beat up Fortress I got caught in the reef and snapped off my bow pulpit as I was trying to retrieve it and here is the new one - I mangled the old one 20 years ago about- and they still gave me a new one at zero cost to me- this means a lot!
