What would you offer? And how much do I need for 3 yrs.

The cat is a 45' 1995 production cat that looks to be in good shape on the east coast of America:

The boat has been on the market for over two years starting in the $290k now asking $245

Sails 5-10 years old
brand new engines
sail drives ???
solar 600w
bimini
lots of ground tackle.

1. What would you offer?
2. How much would you have in reserve after pruchase for 3 yr trip?
3. How much after everything is done to sail away for 3 yrs? (survey, hoist, low sales tax, improvements, keep the boat running)

I was thinking:
1. Offer 180k
2. 100K for 3yrs
3. 300k total

Does that seem reasonable?

If you can afford around 220K, get a good surveyor and find out what is critical on the boat as is.
The owner is hoping for 245K, but some info from a neutral party (surveyor) will help your bargaining position.

Agree - a survey could give you ~10% to ~20% negotiating room if some nasties come up.

It happens, IMHO don't be bullied / convinced into accepting issues due to the previous ownership. Happened to us once and it was a nightmare of belief that never worked out lol

...Offer 180K, then wait for the counteroffer and then you're talking.. Best of luck!
By general rule you need to invest no more than 30% your total budget on the boat.. don't worry, you're gonna use the rest for upgrades and cruising..

30% on the boat. That is interesting I have not heard it put that way before.

I was planning 100k refit to 200K boat and 50k/yr for 3-5 yrs. This makes 550k, so seems about right I should have 600k for a family of 4.
