Re: What charts and guides for the Med and where to buy?

You have a few options here.

Imray has a very good set of pilot guides for the med:
Imray nautical charts and nautical books from Imray, Admiralty Charts and pilots for sailing navigation from Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd www.imray.com
..they cover every country in detail and also give very good background to the reality of each port or anchorage which you may not be able to derive directly from charts - this has the added advantage of being in generally a uniform format so that you can get through to the critical information quickly without too many individual opinions coming into play. However, it would be expensive to go out and buy a full set.

The other end of the cost spectrum relies on a good internet connection:
World Cruising and Sailing Wiki - a Cruising Guide on the World Cruising and Sailing Wiki
..cruisers Wiki covers many of the ports and anchorages in the med and gives the perspective of fellow cruisers who have been there recently and updated the information.

The best combination, however, may be to purchase the pilot guides for the main cruising areas which you plan to spend alot of time in, Italy, Greece and Turkey, for example and then suppliment this with the wiki and you charts for the rest of the trip.
Rod Heikell's books are very well written and are worth more than their face value IMHO, many nights of excited reading ahead:
Imray nautical books and nautical charts from Imray, Admiralty charts and pilots for sailing navigation from Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd www.imray.com
Imray nautical books and nautical charts from Imray, Admiralty charts and pilots for sailing navigation from Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd www.imray.com

The small village on the front cover of the Italian Waters pilot is Portovenere.. we originally went in there just for the evening and ended up spending a week - there's 4-5 shops just dedicated to Basil pestos.. we ate and drank like Kings while we were there!

I apologise for the oddity of self-quoting but as I clicked 'send reply' the thought of Portovenere brought back a memory of me dangling half-way up the mast holding my phone, high enough to get a data signal so that my wife could use me as a hot-spot while she used the internet down below in the saloon! The things we do...

Having done similar voyage, I strongly recommend that You buy whatever material before you depart as the prices along the way vary tremendously.

Agree on other comments about Pilot Books/Charts - Imray seems to offer a wide product range - yet many sailors have their own favorite publisher including those who
like local sources. Some internet searches like help you narrow down choices & help identify preferred sources. You also might be able to find / trade on-line.

..........and coincidentally(smile) I just happen to have a few Imray charts left, that cover some of your intended course. Excellent condition - only used lightly as I passed through........relied most on gps but used chart to do pre-departure planning, creating waypoints and approaches:
# / Edition / Area
C43 - 2011/2011 - Santander to Coruna - 1:350
C48 - 2010/2010 - Coruna to Porto - 1:350
C19 - 2010/2010 - Cabo Finisterre to Gibraltar - 1:825

Originally listed on CF (http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ope-73050.html) for $25 usd each(due to excellent condition) + postage.......will consider reasonable offer

Enjoy Your Cruise

Re: What charts and guides for the Med and where to buy?

Thanks for the replies
Im looking at this page and see Imray C18 and C19 cover the area from Le Sables to Gibralter.

Price is 18 euros each
Would they be small enough scale to cover that passage?
Also in the med I see these charts

Price is 16 euros each
would I need M3 M6 M8 M9 M10 M11 M12 M13 M14 M15

Thanks again

Also what pilot guides would be necessary?

The Imray charts are fine unless you want to enter one of the ports not detailed , then they are useless. In the med your chartplotter is probably more current and I use the imrays as backup.

The bigger area ones are useful for passage planning too.

It's not difficult to get charts along the way in any of the major yachting areas

Re: What charts and guides for the Med and where to buy?

Pilot Books/ Cruising Guides - take your pick to cover your route
Imray nautical charts and nautical books from Imray, Admiralty Charts and pilots for sailing navigation from Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson Ltd www.imray.com

Charts - come in different scales - passage to coastal(with town/harbour detail)
so decide which you are comfortable with. A trip to chandlery vs on-line viewing might be best.......

The combo chart, gps & cruising guide should get you in/out safely

Everyone has their own style, approach & technique to navigation. Experiment to you find the one that works for You. Start with "more" & be conservative until you get comfortable.

Good Luck

We have been in the Med for a few years off and on. Personally I would not bother with pilots, guides etc. You can find out about the next stop at the present one. Just chat to other boats, its a lot of fun and more of an adventure.
