A CLOSE encounter with a whale has made a stopover in Yamba an unforgettable experience for Mackay couple Mark and Patricia Meulman.

The pair had been sailing north from Sydney on board their recently acquired 10m catamaran when their vessel collided with a large object five nautical miles south of the Yamba bar on Tuesday afternoon, sending them scrambling to investigate the cause.

With the amount of whales around this time of year, I'm surprised there aren't a lot more collisions

Perhaps the starboard hull was sprayed by the apprentice. Or It could be a Friday boat

White would be gelcoat. I couldn't think of a reason they would put bog in a boat coming out of a mold.

Like ozskipper said, might have been a Friday boat 'cause it's bloody thick gelcoat.

If it's like that over the entire build there would have to be several hundred Kg of dead weight .

bog == bondo

I still think it's the core. The brownish areas look to be the internal layers of glass - i.e. large chunks of the core have been torn out also. Quite significant damage if this is so.

I have spoken with the owner and offered him our support, the repairers will need things like specific colours, material types etc etc.

Just on the issue of whats what under the Gel Coat etc, I think this boat is around year 2000 launch, so I am not sure whether it had previously had a ding etc, so lets not assume thats how it came out of the moulds, not saying that it didnt come out like that - just that I don't know. The owners had only recently purchased the boat (not from us - but nevertheless we are keen to assist them).

Anyway - it was certainly pleasing to see that they got it to Yamba under their own steam and were able to get it lifted straight away etc.

I hate to think what may have happenned if it was "another form" of vessel

Ok, I see. I still think it looks as if there is about a 1/4" layer of glass that has sheared all around exposing the core. There is a dark line on the edge that looks like the thickness of the fibreglass. I've seen photos of other boats using a bog like substance for the core in the past.

And if not, what a horrible piece of workmanship that is then!

I hit one once, while we were surfing down a wave on a 45 foot plywood Spencer. Scared the crap out of me!

We were doing around 15 odd knots at the time, A couple of hundred miles offshore and SE of Sydney. The Boat gave a big lurch, then we were away again, blood or whale crap clouding the water behind us and a couple of big sperm whales about.

We suspect it may have been a young one (someone on the rail saw a smaller tail fluke), and there was no damage so it must have been a glancing blow.

I also had an aggressive minke charge a boat, at the very last minute it veered away, passing a half a meter from our stern.

Glad I have a metal boat, that will give one of the brutes a headache.
