So, has anyone found this disturbing?

Mr Seaslug apparently did, but no one else really and I admit to be being intrigued by his fascination with this. I mean his seawind 24 is a great little boat, but they have been upside down with reliable regularity?

Yep, wind gust over 150 knots. According to one member around here, the seas get flatter when it gets that high.

I'm suprised this hasn't been mentioned, maybe it has ,and I'm missing out through my use of the ignore function.

The catamaran that capsized on the Wide Bay Bar a few months back "Catcha", was infact
identified by the owners on their web page as a Parallax 11, another Robin Chamberlin design.

Two Chamberlin "performance" cruisers flipped so far this year.

Not a good year for anybody.(sailors or designer)

Dear Sir or Madam Seaslug,

Your opinions would hold more weight if we knew who you are and what qualifications you have. Otherwise it seems you are just grinding the proverbial axe which I assume is not your mission.

It has not been a particularly bad year for cats. Monos on the other hand have been involved in several tragedies of late. Most recently off the coast of Florida. Any boat can fail if conditions are right and the crew do their part to help it fail.

Have you seen that video of the 40 odd foot Catamaran coming thru the South Morton Bar in huge seas, 3 or 4 years back now, from memory,
It dissapeared from sight a few times, below the waves, But it got thru with out damage,

I don't think Robin Chamberlin should feel responsible. Crossing a bar in rough conditions always carries some risk.


And Bruce Arms sailed BWR round Australia in record time, crossed the Tasman several times, did tens of thousands of miles singled handed without incident.


These guys own the boat a month and flip it. I'd suggest the fault isn't in the design.

I've got to say, the fact that a boat of that design can flip, just by the new owners not doing something correct worries me. And in a river to boot!

Is it really that easy? And if it is, is it really that safe?

Just remember - this is the boat that holds the Round Australia solo non stop record. Its not a block of flats, its a very high performance boat.

Cats can capsize if you leave all your sail area in high winds. Just like monos can, as well. Indeed, monos can get knocked down causing damage and injury even earlier. If you bought a performance mono with a huge sail plan and left it all up in strong winds you'd get smashed too. Anyone could spin a Ferrari into a wall by making a simple mistake, for example. It would appear that the new owners didn't understand what they'd bought or how to sail it.

It's a testament to the design and build that it still kept its rig!
