How do cats fair in bad weather? I was in a blow of about 50 knots with some fairly steep seas, and I am intrigued as to how they handle conditions like that. I like cats, but it is an area I would need to know about before considering one.

they are great , i crossed biscay this last year in may on my 38 ft cat and took a force 8/9 on the nose, 25 ft seas never felt threatened or worried , didnt enjoy it but ...my crew felt the same , it inspired confidence in all .buoyancy is king !

The older Prouts now go for 50k sterling. 100kdollars. NO OSMOSIS on an old cat a very few structural problems. Surveyors know where they are. They are heavier than a modern boat and undermasted.
Ron Underwood (original Prout director) would be happy to put a mast up to 10% longer on most of the Prout boats and having experimented with more production boats with forward masts finds there is very little advantage and some major minuses. One of these is lack of stay sail, the storm rig and also aerodynamic slot maker to whatever you hang out front. Like the flaps on a Jumbo that give more lift for a bit more drag.
The Prout's also carried sturdy, shallow long keels to give the boat a much better range of balance. There have been comments about Mahe 36 falling over on it's shorter keels. Note there's no skeg on the rudders either tho' it's good to see balanced area rudders taking most off the load of the linkages.
