Using Marine Penetrol over teak exterior

We recently spent days removing several coats of Cetol from the teak toe rails of our 1996 Beneteau. Someone recommended using Marine Penetrol instead of starting the Cetol routine again. Any thoughts?

Re: Using Marine Penetrol over teak exterior

Penetrol has several products, but I've used the additive penetrol to Pettit's Captains Varnish with better results then just the varnish itself. The penetrol helps the varnish soak into the teak better, which helps it last longer.

The problem with exterior teak is it's an oily wood. So in hot direct sunlight (California) it wants to bleed out the oil. Which in turn bubbles up under any coating you put over it. So the better the "Penetration" the longer it lasts.

Thanks for that. The suggestion was to use it alone, in place of varnish. We live in a temperate climate...hot summers, cold winters...

Re: Using Marine Penetrol over teak exterior

If you are down to bare teak. Three coats of Cetol natural and two coats Cetol gloss. Even other Year use a green brite pad and rough the surface and add a single coat of gloss. Have had amazing results with this for 10 years. Easy quick and looks great. Brings the natural color of the teak out.
Cetol natural has no UV protection. The gloss coat has the UV protection.
