No.. Fire Axe's are a common feature in many land structures alongside extinguishers.
Personally however I would choose to swim out rather than open the emergency hatches.

Re: Using breathing aparatus instead of escape hatches?

Btw.

If it's "only" used for the escape situation, one might consider a combo of a used scuba breathing regulator (Stage I&II) with a 4L air bottle of ebay. Costs around 20€ for the bottle + 40-50€ for the regulator.

Make sure you do NOT use this for other purposes. Otherwise better get fully certified Scuba equipment.

Being a cave diver, entanglement would be my concern on swimming out, I'd like to have a little air so that I could untangle myself from a line as I would think it likely there may be one or two floating around

I always thought the boat was the escape hatch from the land life.

"one might consider a combo of a used scuba breathing regulator (Stage I&II) "
I would never trust used equipment, of unknown origin and condition, to remain reliable for critical emergency use. I've also seen "perfectly good" regulators freeflow after being in storage for a few years, as the pressure setting invisible inside the first stage changed with age. Also wouldn't trust a used tank of any size, without getting at least a new VIP for it. And then, since most will also need a hydro...you're close enough to the cost of new to just buy new and *know* it is reliable. (Unless you're patient and knowledgeable and hit a bargain, including shipping rates.)
4 liter, 6 liter...No really. Wouldn't you want something more like a 19-30cf tank, so you could duck back under and salvage the abandon ship bag? Or some food and fresh water? Anything like that?
And don't forget, the hatch and any escape aids should be marked or painted luminous.

Get the hell out. Even warm water is going to cause hypothermia. Again being below if weather is bad enough to turtle seems stupid. If you have scuba gear get the wet suit on prior to a turtle. Worrying about a tank? Have it secured on deck.

Methinks Tony Bullimore proves you wrong by his survival and consequent rescue after 5 days in an upturned mono after losing the keel..
Man can an does achieve amazing feats of survival when the chips are down.. if they're survivors.. not quitters..

Depends on the boat. In our case, yes I do think it would be better to stay inside. We have a compartment under a queen sized bed that would be above the inverted water line which is where I would plan to go.
