Re: USCG proposes to restrict cruising Catamarans to "calm" weather

the USCG is really opening a can of worms here - this could really affect the Cat market on a whole- most folks don’t know Cat sales have recently out stripped Mono sales worldwide- ( better boat on the whole IMHO) I’m wondering if this will reverse this trend- Will people now think twice about buying a cat ?I know the mono hull sailors will feel vindicated and I expect to hear - I told ya so , any moment!- Should I put my cat up for sale , because this news could scare my customers away?

I beg to differ. At least when monos sink, you have plenty of notice, sometimes; whereas cats ALWAYS flip quickly.

Re: USCG proposes to restrict cruising Catamarans to "calm" weather

i think this new legislation would not effect that many catamaran sailors as due to a catamarans windage and general seakeeping abilities, most chose to stay in port when it gets too windy.

No always true,I was sailing a beach cat I rented and there was a hole in it- as we sailed down the beach about a mile it slowly sunk and just rolled over in slow motion! We had to swim ashore thru the surf and swarm of Sea lice -I was so stung up I was sick in bed for 2 days -this is no BS!!

I would take flipping and staying afloat offshore, anytime over sinking straight to the bottom,, the motto always stay with the ship makes it tough when the mono goes down. ....

Yea well , that’s because cat sailors are smarter than Mono hull sailors- everyone know over the last 100 years theres been many more fatalities in mono hulls than in cats

Re: USCG proposes to restrict cruising Catamarans to "calm" weather

I really think its because most of the coast guard sail monohulls in their off time, and are jealous that we look so good sailing our cats,,,,and pass them even upwind,,,,

Easy folks, easy. Might I remind you that if this discussion about a very sensible political decision flips into a cat vs mono rant, we will need to scupper this thread and send it the way of those unfortunate monos.

That’s the whole idea let them guys on half a boat stay holding on to the mast as their boat sinks that way we don’t have to talk about how inferior them there mono hulls are

Oh, I hope it does, this could be an interesting business opportunity moving a shed load of catmarans from the US were the value has just tanked, over to Europe. Since the French built most of them shouldn't be a problem photocopying a few VAT receipts to get them back into the EU.

cat sailers may be smarter,as they will need to be under the new legislation,to pass all the tests.

but mono sailers are much better looking

Cat Sales have only outstripped mono sales due to counting the hulls twice.

IMO the USCG is taking the only sensible course of action - lets all just hope they stop there as with Gubberment always a slippery slope , what's next? checking on how people poop onboard?

The Chicago Catamaran Index dropped 12 points on the USCG news.....

I told ya so.
