up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

I am sure that for all the shoppers looking for boats that they may want to up grade the boat . I just went thru a list of upgrade prices . Many boat sellers will say well this may cost this much or just buy used .
Well this is a cost estimate in last 30 days

all in $$
Yanmar engines 9-10K
Hard top 15100
Chart plotter 4720
radar 2900
solar 4x135w 4250
watermaker 200t 12v 7800
all prices are complete install

Now if you boat has blisters and has to be stripped 50 to 60 K
THAT PRICE on the stripping is for openers.
Saw several boats that owners said 10k but that was just a quick fix and would not really fix problem.
If the boat has blisters --RUN

One other thing I found was itf the boat has been for sale over 6 months either the price was to high for boat or there were major problems
I found that boats that are fairly priced and in good condition usually sale in 30-60 days.

Also a good broker can save you tons of time and money

All this is from the last 7 months of looking at boats and trying to buy .
Other advice is don't buy a project !! Unless you are knowlegable of boats and repair --they turn into Money pits and can be a real downer

up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

Really useful list for most items. Thanks.
Our community may be able to add reality checks on the list. I sense one item to be high based on my experience as a fiberglass fabricator, blister stripping and refinishing a 40' cat with limited below water surface area (vs. mono of same length) would be a fraction of that amount. Of course it depends on location of repair being done.

Re: up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

THESE are based on estimates for a 45 leopard catamaran
The bliister job was an actual estimate for a Lagoon 47
I know these prices are high but thats what I got from a well known yard here in ft lauderdale . I thought the prices were high but I wanted a frame work of referance to estimate the cost of up grading an older boat

What yard? Belay that (let's be professional)

Alternative to cold calling a high end yard for a quote, who will just act as a contractor, is haul at a yard that allows you to do your own work. Then you contact a local marine professional yourself.

Re: up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

I know the prices were high and I just wanted to post what I found . Naturally I would shop hard for good deals but I wanted a "cold " bid on what things would cost . I would never assume I could buy a boat and get every thing for half of what this bid was .
the bottom job was real as the boat was hauled and the estimate was made .
Their are many new boat buyers out there that look at bargins on line and figure what it would take to get the boat upgraded. they buy the boat and then are astonished when there estimate was half of real cost.

Re: up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

Good idea Rancher. When shopping for a boat and knowing it needs ________, I don't care how little Jim's cousins best friend paid for it. I need to know how much I will have to pay so I can get that of the purchase price. Now if I end up getting it used for 1/2 price, that is good for me. But at least we have an idea of what it would cost if I just walked into a yard or store and said "fix this for me, I will be back next week".

Re: up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

Your prices are a joke. I do not believe there is a boater on this forum that would pay those prices. Like the deck recoring prices I have seen quoted here had a quote of 2500.00 to remove teak replace coring and refinish NO Bull.

Victoria has Melbourne, the most livable city in the world, nobody could ever afford to buy it so they don't bother to advertise it.

Queensland is for Victorian expats (retirees) that can't handle 44 degrees during summer that go to Qld seeking more mild weather only to find that it rains frequently in the wet season and is full of bogans at the Gold Coast.

Have I got that right?

There is a good website here from the Hacking Family as they re-fit their boat in Thailand. I'll bet that they never thought it would take this long; from memory they were just going to redo the decks but things took way long, over 2 years. Might go some way to explaining some of yoru prices and how things / upgrades can blow out.

Re: up grade cost on used boats AND BARGINS

Week 115 into the refit - OMG.

One of the things I have learned about boats is to not listen to boat owners who spend their lives with a tool in their hand and then complaining about the shortcomings of the outcomes.

The prices you have quoted are quite reasonable. If you want professionals to do it and do it properly then you have to be prepared to pay for it. Invariably you only get what you pay for.

Disclaimer is that I do live in Australia.
