Ultimate Trimaran Cruising Boat (IMHO)

This is a video clip of the Chris White 54' Hammerhead Trimaran "Flying Fish" I do not know much about it except I understand only a few of these were built.

YouTube - jphusta's Channel

I do not know how to imbed a you tube video so all I have is the link. This boat is 35' wide. HAs always been one of my all time favorite dream boats.

NEEL trimarans

This boat was launched in September an also an interesting cruising tri, very fast knowing the history of Eric Bruneel the builder.

I like multis and there are some very nice Tris - but I have a problem visualising them as a long distance cruising vessel. They are fast and fun, but the living space is sparse compared to a cat, yet haul out is even more difficult due to width.

I am and have always been a huge admirer of the Horstman Tristars. They are not fast by modern standards but are roomy, have adequate storage, efficient hull shapes easily driven with a modest rig, reasonable but adequate beam, many models with pilot houses and low profile. Asymetrical daggerboards for reduced angle of attack, flat slightly cambered decks, I can go on and on. I'd buy a 37XRC in a heart beat. Ed Horstman was a proponent of foam sandwich construction nearly 30 yrs ago. If you question seaworthiness read the account of the Cassanova's aboard Tortuga Too in the southern ocean. These are wonderful cruising boats by any standard. Dave ( a Tristar fan )

Funny, I was just on Chris White's website yesterday looking at the same boat.

I know a Trimaran is not as "roomy" as the same sized Comercial Cat....I am more drawn to them as they are pure sailing boats. They just make sense to me. Anyone who is a fan of "just right" boats would enjoy this site. Nigel is an amazing designer with so much depth. Go beyond this 50' Tri and look at his Schooners.

Nigel Irens Design

I have a friend who has a 44' cat that does not have the same accomidations as other cats. It is my favorite Cruising Cat.....:-)

Pure Sailing boat.

Yo Jmolan,
What kind of cat is that?
I'd guess its a John Shuttleworth design?
It sort of looks like the Southern Ocean 50...

Solarbri,.....the boat is "Pantera" I do not have any photos of him moving because he never is around us.....

It is an amazing boat. Designed and built by Robert Smith of Victoria B.C. Bob is in Mexico in the winters and cleans up on any races he is in. He singlehands mostly, including his return trips home to BC from Mexico.

The boat is 44' all exotic materials. Nomex honeycomb, carbon fiber etc. The mast is 58' wing rotating, same exotic materials.

We did get to sail along side one light air day. He had only his blade of a jib up, and we were full on main and drifter...

He uses a 9.9 hp Yamaha outboard mounted in the small pod in the middle aft. He uses a killer 13' rowing Peapod with long sweeps for a dinghy.

It is true cruising. For me I love it. If you take the ultimate sailing boat, then start to add on each thing that you "need" to survive and to be comfortable. You will start to take away from that pure sailing. The more you add, the farther you get away from that original perfection. Beam and displacement and a bank of batteries and water and fuel and diesel and on and on and on. There is nothing wrong with this. It is just that I am so attracted to pure boats.
I can also appreciate a 50' Aluminum Mono built for high latitudes. It is a work boat, and built for a purpose. But nothing grabs me like the less "encumbered" boats.

Couple more shots I jut realized I had. From cruising the Baja last spring. The day he kept it in first gear....

Oh yea, you can always spot him, he anchors backwards, off his port hull.

1.5 times the wind speed up to about 12 or 15 kts., then he backs off it.
