Top 10 Cat Manufacturers

My buddy and I were talking about the big volume builders and we realized we didn't have a clue as to the ranking of total boats built. I figure that Lagoon is #1 but don't know their total output to date. We also think FP is 2nd with about 2200 total boats built according to a FP dealers website. I know Geminis got over 1100 and Catalac about 600. Don't know about Privilege, Leopard, Catana, Seawind, etc. I thought I read that Manta had about 400 and Outremer about 200. So, just for fun if you guys and girls could help me out with the rankings and hard numbers not guesstimates and maybe we could find the top 10 or more and the numbers. Thanx BOB

Re: Top 10 Cat Manufacturers

Seawind assigns a unique seawind number to each boat built. Its marked on the boat in all sorts of places, e.g. engraved on my fuel tanks. My boat was 353rd seawind built, and the last boat launched was 405.

Thats for all types, not just the 1000/xl/xl2.

Re: Top 10 Cat Manufacturers

FP has a good page and lists all models production runs for a total of 2050 by last year. Fountaine Pajot / Une entreprise leader I think the powercats are included.
Outremer claims 200 here. Outremer Catamaran - The Concept
So I was wrong about Mantas run. That's why I started this thread. Thanks again everybody. BOB

Is that a "almost flying a hull" on a 59 footer? I'm impressed.

Re: Top 10 Cat Manufacturers

I think basing this list on the basis of numbers sold is totally meaningless. Numbers sold by one manufacturer as a percentage of overall catamarans sold that year, and the numbers meaned over a 5 year period of their best sales would be interesting.

looking at numbers of second hand being sold is also meaningless as it ignores how many were built and how long people keep that boat.

even comparing numbers of catalacs (for example) versus number of performance cats being sold is statistically invalid. They appeal to a totally different audience.

Comparing how long people keep their particular cat would be a very interesting statistic (for example I owned my Catalac 9m for more than 20 years)

Statistics are tricky, and if the person quoting statistics does not explain the basis of the exam question, the assumptions used, and the size of the statistical sample, then they are very untrustworthy.

Hello Sandcrab,

The yacht in the picture is the 47,not the 59.
Nevertheless pretty cool. There is also a 55("sports version") of the 50 and there will be a 49 as well("sports version" of the 47)

Cheers!

The only valid statistic I'm intersted in is the total volume of the manufacturer to date. This is a cold hard fact and is not debatable. We know that Lagoon has been the world leader for a long time in yearly sales and total output. I do agree that yearly sales numbers for a given manufacturer and the models sold would be good data but very hard to acquire. I'm not debating attributes, bridgedeck clearance, daggerboards or anything else. Comparing how long someone owns a boat would be interesting but somewhat useless stat because too many variables would affect it.
Back to this thread. I havn't researched it yet but does anyone know anything about Leopard? Are they #3?
I thought that that boat was a Catana 59 because it was on that page. My buddy have now started calling the Catanas Countachs because like the famous car they look striking with all the hard edges and lines. As I said before just badass. You don't have to agree. BOB
