Re: Toilets and Shower More Important Than Sailing Capabilities ?

Thanks for your feedback.

Reading through CF it looks like most cruiser folks are spending their time : 20% sailing, 80% mooring. It seems to me that sailing capabilities are a little bit overvalued (in the above feedback). Whereas nobody mentioned the mooring costs (in the marinas). Lagoon 400 saves 10 resp 15 feet ... and that can be quite a lot over the time.

Looking at running costs - seems to me Lagoon 400 (even if its crappy french quality) is the best choice - small, pretty new, well designed for maintenance.

Re: Toilets and Shower More Important Than Sailing Capabilities ?

Can you really get a cruising equipped L400 for 270K Euro? Actually, any of those boats? I suspect any at that price are not ready for long-term cruising (but that may actually be the market situation now - I don't know).

Most cruisers spend that 80% time at anchor, so the cost is free.

Personally, if I were to sail Norway to Alaska via the horn, I wouldn't want any of those choices.

Zonker -- are you really thinking about Argentina to Alaska via Cape Horn? That is a critical question. If you're going the long way back up to Panama, that's one thing. Cape Horn is another thing, entirely. If so, I'm with Mark. While the Outremer would be the best of the choices you gave, do keep in mind that you're well below the iceberg limits, even in the middle of summer, not to mention the W to E prevailing winds, typically steep waves, etc. There are good reasons why there's a pretty exclusive club of sailors who've done it. I'm not one of them and never will be!

Re: Toilets and Shower More Important Than Sailing Capabilities ?

About eight years ago I was in La Grande Motte in S France when I saw a parade of beautiful catamarans sailing out.. I just knew I had to have one....

Now I have

It is an Outremer ....
Did I mention carbon fibre wing mast?
Carbon fibre daggerboards and rudders?
And she is beautiful ..

Outremer and Lagoon are polar opposites - day and nite- yin and yang- quality and low cost fittings, wire and sails, (Lagoon)

You're exactly right. All boats, no matter who you are or where your boat is spend 99% of their life at anchor or at the docks. Comfort always come first, especially if you plan on keeping a significant other aboard.

You spend the big bucks for a catamaran for comfort, not to get into harbor 8 minutes before the next guy. Cruising isn't a race, it's a lifestyle.

To the guys it applies to, buy a catamaran and sail her first before giving advice.

I dont disagree - but it is possible to have both reasonable and safe seagoing performance as well as a comfortable boat. There are some absolute design issues that render a boat not blue water for me, and the lagoon 40 engine access is one of those.
