The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

Elana explains it pretty well at the 3.51 minute mark ,

"we want to live our life on the ocean , to do that, you need to be comfortable...."

I have been saying that for a long time now. Leaners are not like home.
Most cruisers today want a FLAT comfortable ride.

The old salts don't like it...
You are supposed to be uncomfortable as almost a right of passage.
Have no refrigeration and eat potatoes after you dig them out of the bilge and knock off the growing eyes.
You can't have a water maker and need to shower once a week with a garden sprayer or better yet, sneak a shower at the dinghy dock water hose at night.

There is this weird mindset in the Cruising Community that the old way is always better. Anything new is somehow going to open up the community to the masses....ah....there you go...that's the heart of it isn't it. If Cruising is too Comfortable and the Jones can do it, well good grief...

Because they were given one to use for free? Is that the reason? Do I win a prize?

People who prefer the set of compromises cats offer and have the money to buy one is the main reason.

Can we please not make this another cat v mono debate? Pretty please?

Re: The Reason People Are Moving Away From Monohulls

GPS opened cruising to the masses, really nothing else. Cats have simply given people more choices and women have been making many of the decisions so the Cat market has really expanded but on the whole they still represent a small portion of the cruising boats out there compared to mono's. Cats are very cool, some of them leave something to be desired when it comes to sailing but sailing is well down the list of wantahaves. Monos will continue to rule because of costs, costs to aquire and costs to maintain and store. There is plenty of room for both choices.

I'm guessing it is hard to apply make-up when your boat is rocking?

They were given affordable financing by Outremer, not free to use they are purchasing.

No argument that a multi is more comfortable at anchor and I believe that is why this design has gained the lead in new sales.

But the sea is not FLAT and a heavy loaded cruising cat compaired to the same loaded mono, is not the most comfortable in all points of sail, in rough/ steep seas.

Lastly, going to windward, I like the Lean.....gives me a high side for better lookout and most importantly, that extended "lean" without any risk of capsize, is my safety valve to dump the force of a bullet wind out of my sails,

If buying a "new to me" boat today for say about $500k, I am honestly not sure how many hulls I would buy.

Affordable financing? What does that mean? Did they pay full price and simply got a low interest rate or did they get deep discounts plus a low interest rate or what?

That would be easy for me....a Cat and never look back....

Which, if we can talk frankly for a moment, is why some monohull folks don't like cats. It's old fashioned Class Envy thing in the world where we are bread and feed a constant stream of anti evil 1%-er BS. Anyone with more money than you is the enemy and anyone with a better boat got it from screwing the poor. Hey...that's the political landscape today folks...so all of us that can afford to go cruising in their eyes we are the evil 1%-ers. Can I get a T-shirt that says "Evil 1%-er"

I'm not sure. In a previous video they stated something along those lines. I haven't seen the new video.

Either way, they can afford it. they reportedly made $300 to $340k last year on Patreon alone!

Lol Rich.... Time for you to go cruising and get away from both sides of the political media [emoji1]

I am way past trying to impress anyone and while I agree multi hulls will be the future for many reasons......, just like cars, the new ones are technically superior, but there is still a place for the old classics, that represented a different time (and ironically a different perspective in judging another's success).

...I simply say.....
May your hull(s) go with you!

Who knows what kind of deal they got but they are a constant advertising agent for the builder so they may even be paying for it by how many videos they produce. Anyone that has the high traffic counts gets a ton of stuff for free so my bet is that saying that they are buying it may be a really good choice for the builder even if they are only paying pennies on the dollar,
