22 feet wide and 8000 lbs is a bit much to trailer around but then maybe in Texas ?

The biggest disadvantage in using a tiller is that there is no forward visibility since the saloon is in the way.
The verdict : no tiller

Here is a picture of a solution on a 49 foot cat, but the steering position is a bit exposed to the elements, but not more so than on some other cats.

I agree with Gideon, that for cruising you are going tobe on autopilot nearly all the time.
You can get reasonable rudder feedback using torsion rods and wheels.

Tillers on cruising cats

Interesting-what does the rest of the assembly look like? You will notice that there are no stairs or swim ladder shown. I'd hate to give them up, especially considering the freeboard on most cruising cats.

Here are a couple of pictures showing the transom steps and the view under the bridgedeck. There was a fixed crosslink bar running across the boat hidden under the cockpit seats as far as I remember

By the way, you can get feedback from hydraulic systems, with a 'sailing valve' installed, though certainly less than you would get from a tiller. I used to have a tiller on 'Batwing' outside, and a hydraulic system with a sailing valve inside, so I had the opportunity for direct comparison.

On the FastCat 455 we use the hydrive system with rudder feedback and hydraulic link and it gives a good feel of the rudder, the rudder we use is a spade rudder) no skeg) and the rudder stock is mounted at the 25 % point she is very responsive .

Its to bad you cant make it more movable so you can launch it anywhere. You would get more people to look at it I think!

Selling our cats is no problem we are sold out for almost 3 years and for the moment have stopped taking orders
Making them in enough high volume is more of a problem and we are working on that issue now with a new factory

Greetings

Here are some more pictures. These pictures as well as the earlier are Eric Lerouge designs. Earlier pictures where a Freydis 49. These pictures are a Brazapi 40 and a Brazapi 50.
