I look forward to getting updates on an upstarts progress.

Folks made fun of old Charley ( not a NA ) but I hear his O/I was the best selling boat over 40' of all time.
There was a big difference when Spray sailed away. Slocum was an experienced seaman and captain who knew his business well and had put many miles under the keel of wooden vessels. No one doubted Spray's sea keeping after Slocum had rebuilt her. In fact the most common question at the time was "how will she pay?" meaning what commercial interest could he get out of her.

Sometimes excellent people do excellent things that are unusual or novel. But this doesn't mean that everyone that does something new or unusual is excellent or that the thing they've done is excellent.

I bet they said "Man, Josh has been sailing professionally for over 25 years. He also built a 150 ton steamer. He rebuilt Spray really well. Used the right wood, knew what he was doing, and is leaving on an incredibly seaworthy vessel."

Believe me, I fully understand. I have done many sea trials on commercially built vessels and more than a few shakedowns on my stuff.

We all know design flaws can be corrected if the captain starts with baby steps and the sea chooses to be gentle. She may never race a Dragon Fly but it is my hope that it stays afloat long enough to work out the bugs.

Ya gotta give the guy an E for effort even if he will never a PHRF rating.

I'm not wishing the guy harm, but I do take offense a bit to people who don't respect the sea. They think, by reading some forums and visiting West Marine, that they can get all their planning done in advance. It's taken me over ten years just to get to the point that I feel comfortable getting ready to cross an ocean and that hardly guarantees success.

It truly is arrogance for someone with no shipbuilding experience to think that they can compete at the level of master shipwrights.

The bugs he needs to work out are the overall design and construction of the vessel. The best thing he could do is start with a 12' dinghy, like everyone else, and work his way up.

1) She didn't build her own boat.

2) Less experience is coupled with a propensity for worse results. Exceptions don't disprove averages.

The guys installed radar and a wind genny. This is the only picture that I have seen but at first glance the rigging isn't going to carry much sail. The gussets underneath will add strength to the Ama attachments. The Ama and the freeboard look to be 6' or better.

There is a smaller version of a similar home build docked at my favorite marina. It is the third version of a young college dropouts dreamboat. He sailed the first from the UK to Caribbean where he sold it and built bigger. This one is a plywood cored boat that has sailed the Caribbean and the GOM for over 20 years.

I can't remember any of the naval architects taking offense over custom designs. They sometimes get a laugh out them. Sometimes they steal a layman's ideas. I have walked many a dock looking for inspiration.

Jack, or anybody else for that matter

What did I miss? Is there a thread here or somewhere else where this guy asked anybody for their advice then ignored it? A blog I'm missing perhaps?

I tried to get my boys to sail the little Capri 13 I had. I also believe small boats teach big things.

They never went for it much. They liked the 41.

Them not wanting to sail the baby boat will always be a bone of contention with me. It keeps me topside when things are hairy.

I think my oldest has a better handle on blind sailing than I.

I too have all the right in the world to be wrong.

He didn't ask for advice...but for money and tools and free equipment, and was told this is not how you build a 65ft boat. Look at the SA thread,
some guys went out and talked to him, took pictures of the construction. The hulls are just hollow, no bulkheads!

'Upon seeing the craft, retired journeyman boat-builder Ron Minnis of Loomis agreed with the riggers, saying Lane “used standard household-building construction which will not work for boats unless he’s done a whole lot of reinforcing that I haven’t seen.”'

I think quite a few said... "Lets see if he manages to sink this one as well"...

Gads, so building your own boat doesn't give you experience? I don't know this guy, but dang, there are worse crimes than building a boat, even building a badly built boat.

There seems to be an attitude of exclusive rights to living a dream, daring to do something different.

The problem, perhaps, is that he is misinformed thinking that he is entitled to do what he pleases on the ocean.

My husband's answer is: He is.

My answer:
Sorry, I don't see where he is doing "as he pleases". I haven't read everything about him. But what law(s) has he broken? If no laws broken then I guess I should ask your definition of " doing as he pleases".
