Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

Just in from SA. Apparently the rig is full of lines flying all over the place, and Hot Rod et al. are having real problems parking the Fly Hi Jr. in its usual spot between the hulls. They're in a much less sheltered anchorage, not too far from the main channel. Look at the swell in the 2nd picture... how long until a seam opens?

Chart 18652a

Depth where he is anchored is 13, which I'm guessing is in fathoms? 24m to me, which is more than the top of his masts... I think buying a little Bayliner escape pod was a good call, probably the first he's made.

It may be that a few days on the bay in 25 knot winds will create an impression on the owner and keep him inside the gate. Even well prepared boats tear things up sometimes.

Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

Well I for one will be watching to see where this craft ends up.
But, then one of the posts here reminded me of a group of ex hippies who called themselves the Floating Neutrinos.
Floating Neutrinos
They lived in New York Harbor for awhile on a raft made of stuff recycled off the streets of New York. Damned if they did not take it across the Atlantic though not without some second thoughts from some of the crew once they got off the Maine Coast. The unbelievable story of the Floating Neutrinos in a raft across the Atlantic ocean . - YouTube
Looking at their craft I would have thought no way are they ever gonna make it. But, apparently they did. So the Flyin Hawaiian may be as lucky as the Floating Neutrinos or maybe not.

Has anyone told GalaxyGirl about the X-50?

I doubt FH could survive as far as the lightship. I think just going through the gate will be enough to tear it apart. Might be nice enough chilling in the delta, in some well protected slough.

Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

There's a Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle on the back porch btw. That's like a big Japanese Harley.
Good thing they are wearing PFDs. No lifelines or stanchions.

If you blow up that pic you can just make it out on the port side.

Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

For that boat to make it as a houseboat in a quiet slough, he would need to haul it out now and slap on two or three layers of 10-oz glass covering the exterior of the hulls. Otherwise . . . Have you ever left a scrap of 1/2" CDX out in the weather? The stuff disintegrates fast. If he had used 1/2" MDO (poor man's marine ply), it would last much longer. But still, some epoxy/glass sheathing is required for any sort of longevity when plywood is immersed fulltime.

An AC72 made it out of the bay, although not in one piece...

No. Right next to the barbecue.

That's what is so great about this whole thing - there's no need for embellishment! A guy called Hot Rod builds himself a floating shed called the Flyin' Hawaiian, sticks a chopper and a BBQ on the back, put his family inside and calls it good. Anyone who tells us we can't have a damn good laugh about that can just... well...
