So was not the point - The FH will float, it is right now... but for how long? The SG flew for a mile and has never been flown or attempted again. Big deal.

A (wood) plane the size of SG is impractical, even Hughes admitted that. A 65ft homeless depot cat is impractical, but this guy won't back down until someone is seriously hurt or dies... and I bet even then he will blame all the "naysayers" instead of his construction methods...

He is not a fool for building the boat that he wants - he IS a fool for not using tried and true construction methods, nothing will change that fact. Even if it actually does sail, it will always have issues, some may not be able to be overcome. But I doubt he will ever admit them.

Following that thread I think he may be able to make Hawaii with some solid motors and a few thousand gallons of fuel, 70%. As a sailboat I give him a 15% chance.... Errrr, 5%. Well pretty low.

There was a picture in the Marin newspaper about a month ago, it was already sagging in the middle and the hulls were starting to splay outwards. I give it one month of good hard rain. It will begin to compost.

I think coir or peat moss will help with that. Some say additional ventilation is not required, depends on installation. Oops, wrong thread.

Seriously though, I hate to see someone's dreams turn to mush--no matter how lacking their interpersonal skills. Particularly when that someone actually had the gumption to go out and chase those dreams in earnest by investing sweat and tears. Too many are content to just sit on the couch and watch or read about the adventures of others. I applaud HR's passion. I understand the concerns about rescue costs, giving cruisers a bad name, etc. but the fact remains that this guy actually gave it a shot. I hope he finds some satisfaction from his creation.

Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

"Lacking interpersonal skills"???

He bit somebody- is he a person or a dog?

I also applaude him for having the brass set to build such a "designless" abomination... but at least build it to some usable standards. I've seen housing barges that had more "design" to them.

Just because you "can" doesn't always mean that you should...

Looks like this whole fiasco is coming to an end. The FH will be abandoned in a week or two if James's effort to locate a buyer fails. Seems he 's completely out of funds and his crew has jumped ship. It's a shame he overshot the building your own boat and sailing away dream, better luck next time Mr Hotrod..

Where did you get this tidbit of info? And then when it's abandoned, who is then responsible for demo costs? Marin county?

Can someone there salvage me those flashing LED colored lights...wait....too soon?

Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

I'm not sure if there are issues that are becoming critical with the build but I think it would be an OK houseboat. Shame to scrap it.

Re: The Flyin Hawaiian is gone!

Hot Rod is posting to the SA thread. At first no one believed it was him so I posted my phone # there and asked him to call. His phone # was already public knowledge and he called me from his phone. So it's really him and he says he's done with everything.
