Taking A Boat Home To Australia

Hi All

Has anyone purchased a Lagoon 450 or large cat overseas, paid GST etc in the country they bought it in and then returned to Australia?

The indications l am getting is even thought you paid everything else in another country, you STILL need to pay 10% GST and 5% IMPORT DUTY once you return to Australia.....

Has anyone any updates or advise on this??

PS - I am working in Asia on a work permit and will own the boat and register the boat in Asia for at least 2 years prior to going back to Australia.

Thanks
Wayne

Yes, you pay those taxes when you get Oz. if you can prove that the boat was built in a country which has an FTA with Oz, you won't pay the 5% import duty.

Try search for a recent thread on this. It has been hashed out many times. And BTW I'm pretty sure OZ does not have a free trade agreement with France. Chile does however so buy that new Atlantic 47.

The other thread is four years old. As an Australian also planning to import a US built boat into Australia in the next year or so I am also interested in the more recent experiences of others.

Re: Taking A Boat Home To Australia

There was a very detailed thread last year in the multihull section. Go look for it.

The bottom line is that there are no shortcuts. All you can do is spend a few years sailing here and there and so depreciate the boat. The tax is on the value when you arrive not when you bought.

$500,000 + $25,000 plus gst of $52,500 = $577,500.

Tax of $77,500.

Hope you enjoy Australia when you get back.

At least in Victoria it only costs me about $80 for boat registration

Not much has changed.

The calculation of the tax is the easy bit. Do your calculations on a Surveyor's "fire sale" valuation, rather than the value that you hope the boat may be worth. If this is too difficult engage the services of an import agent. These guys know how low the valuation can be before Australian Customs "jack up".

You may be calculating duty and GST on $300k instead of $500k.

PM me if you want the name of a "realistic" surveyor in Brisbane.

Cheers and good luck.

Thanks a lot. PM sent.

As a Minnesota resident I did not pay US sales tax on my boat. Probably about time I paid the piper.

Thank you to everyone, you have to love the Australian way of stealing from us at every level, several times over if you add the GST to the IMPORT DUTY.

Advise is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Taking A Boat Home To Australia

You could always import into the EU and pay around 20%
