SV Sirocco abandoned

Amsa reports a 17 meter catamaran abandoned west of Exmouth western Australia mid October. Tracker left activated , see Skywaves .org.au. Delivery crew taken aboard commercial vessel. See Amsa report.

Does anyone have any details. Was this John Watsons Sirocco
Of Oz? Returning from Bali to Fremantle?

Re: SV Sirocco abandoned

There was a big home built cat of that name in Hillarys for a while? Pretty common name though.

Re: SV Sirocco abandoned

Thanks. Can you cut and paste the article he wrote as well. Perhaps just put it all here. For some reason my iPad is playing up and won't let me select any of it. Wouldn't even let me copy the pictures.

At least the forward half doesn't - how the heck did it get sawed in half?

See below text pasted from Paul Watson´s Facebook page:
SAM SIMON Finds Lost Australian Yacht
On February 23rd, the Sea Shepherd ship SAM SIMON discovered a derelict catamaran in the India Ocean while enroute to Mauritius.
The Darwin registered yacht “SIROCCO OF OZ” was abandoned off of Exmouth, Western Australia in 2014 on October 9th, 2014.
Captain Sid Chakavarty of the SAM SIMON contacted the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in South Africa with the following message:
Subject: M/Y Sam Simon- Sighting of Derelict vessel- 23.02.2015
To concerned parties;
In position 23 Deg 25.9' South; 054 Deg 48.4' East, a derelict forward section of a catamaran was spotted. The bow section on the starboard hull is riding about 1 meter out of the water, while the forward rigging and the port hull section is just below the surface. The derelict section currently poses a threat to vessel traffic.
The vessel has been identified as the "Sirocco Of Oz", Call Sign VJN 4201.
The M/Y Sam Simon is a Dutch-registered pleasure craft en route to Port Louis, Mauritius. The vessel has currently launched her small boat and has found no survivors on the vessel.
A Securite call on channel 16 has been made and all traffic in range has been advised.
Photos of the vessel will follow shortly.
I would request you to kindly issue a Securite for all traffic in this region.
Regards,
Siddharth Chakravarty,
The following information was received back from South Africa.
MRCC Cape Town
The below incident occurred 9 October 2014
Report from Marine authorities in Cape Town in reply
Owner of catamaran SIROCCO OF OZ reported that the vessel was experiencing engine trouble on delivery voyage from Cocos Island to WA. No assistance was requested at this time. A later call at 101225UTC from an associate in Australia indicated that the vessel skipper believed that he could no longer make the Australian mainland and may need to request assistance from JRCC Australia in the future. Early on Saturday morning, the delivery skipper onboard requested assistance as the 3 crew onboard wished to abandon the vessel as system onboard and the integrity of the vessel were failing and the 3 crewman were fearful for their lives. JRCC Australia issued a Distress Relay broadcast to shipping and diverted the bulk carrier ALAM SETIA/9V2144 towards the catamaran's position. Once onscene 8 hours after diverting the small rescue vessel successfully rescued all 3 yachtsmen and the SIROCCO was left abandoned and adrift. The ALAM SETIA was enroute to a port in the UAE to bunker on 25 October but the 3 men were disembarked at Shuaiba, Kurwait on 28 October 2014.

Re: SV Sirocco abandoned

While it is unclear exactly where the yacht was abandoned, when San Simon saw it is south of Mauritius. Assuming that it was abandoned half way from Cocos Keeling Islands to the nearest part of mainland Australia, then the wreck has drifted over 4,500 km (say 2,500 nm) in under five months. Pretty impressive, about 0.75 knots.
