Superyacht 61 meter Sailing Catamaran

Has anyone else seen this new concept? I suggested it might have been a MUCH better alternative to that SY A disaster.

Most megayacht concepts are motoryachts. The catamaran configuration for Spectrum 61 therefore makes her stand apart. So, too, does the 200-foot (61-meter) LOA, plus a beam and decided emphasis on entertainment that will make other owners envious.


Spectrum 61 comes from the drawing boards of Australia’s Sedlmayer Associates. The design studio is owned by Albert Sedlmayer, who has penned a number of sailing and power catamarans on the water.


The beamy nature of catamarans means expansive spaces to enjoy. Spectrum 61 has nearly 86 feet (26.2 meters) of width. Sedlmayer envisions the owners being active, welcoming cruisers. That’s why there are beach clubs in each hull, and two tender-mooring areas just forward between the hulls. Friends and family can shuttle to Spectrum 61 from shore—or from other nearby yachts. Sedlmayer further sees both the fold-down platforms of the beach clubs and the sides of the main aft deck serving as dockside cafes, not mere relaxation zones.

Meh,

I find it hard to get excited about super yachts of any type. They are obviously massive and expensive, and this one seems to be far more realistic than most. But I don't see the draw. I like to go sailing, not just be on a boat. I would rather stay in a nice hotel and sail a skiff than take this out.

Not that I wouldn't go if invited. But it wouldn't really be my type of thing (even if I could afford the stasail on it).

I like mega-yachts. They take a bazillion people to design, build, maintain, crew, etc. Anything that keeps the maritime community employed is fine with me. I've worked on a few, crewed two, and decided I'd rather own my own 60 footer than drive someone elses 150 footer; that said, I was glad for the work when I had it and am glad for the work it gives (many) others. To each ones' own.

The problem with the sailing Megayacht is that it is hard to land one's helicopter on the deck.

That's what the shadow yacht is for. You land on it and take over the 45' Bertram dinghy. Obviously it's hard to suffer thru such indignity as having to make a transfer but it doable.

Graving dock or floating drydock.
The Emma Maersk is a tad bigger, and they managed to get it built.

In case it went unseen, I had suggested this vessel might have been a much better choice than that monstrosity Sailing Yachy "A" being built by that Russian billionaire:

I find them fascinating and I would love to go for a cruise on one just to see what it's like, but to me it seems no different then going on a cruise ship. Its big there's lots of people around working on it and you aren't doing anything. It is just a floating vacation home, not a boat.

With that being said, I don't have any problems with them and I think they are beautiful it just wouldn't be my cup if I had the means.

Superstructure is complicated. Red on grey is yuk. Could be a lot nicer.
