Steel Cats

Is this a good material for a cruising cat? I guess it would never fall apart even in the worst weather, but would sink like a stone if capsized and water was allowed to flow in? What about speed and load carrying capacity?

Here is an unfinished project on ebay AU. It just doesn't seem like the best idea to me.

Its a catrina 36 foot ketch, 7.6 ton just for the bare hull.

Probably for the same reason all the bare steel mono hulls are?. No time and money. Was a lot more work than initially expected?

There was a really nice ally one on there too.

If steel is so good for multis why do the rest of use Foam, balsa, re-enforced air (numerous other lightweight yet strong materials) to build them from?

As for ally, most would agree that 50ft is about the smallest size you would want to be before it comes into play.

I wouldn't be sure about never falling apart. It has been open to the weather and water is pooling inside. There's going to be weak spots and you'll never see them.

Plus, of course, cat man do is being gracious in his assessment of likely performance. That thing would probably take 15 knots just to get moving.

7.6 tonnes for just the bare hulls..... so probably something around 10 tonnes for the finished, rigged, engined boat, plus maybe 2 tonnes for gear, food water etc.....that's a 12 (or more) tonne, 36 foot cat.

It's not going to be good.

Its as heavy than some steel monos of that length. I cant find the alloy one. It looked a LOT better and was bigger. Not quite 50, but getting close.

No. There's tons of ugly ass, bastard boats out there. It wouldn't surprise me that some guy thought his steel Ketchcat was a fantastic idea.

Just walk around a large marina to see many examples of "shouldn't that guy have known that was a *hit idea?".

I bet he was disappointed then when the bidding went to like 3K and his previous buy it now was 10K. I wouldn't even complete it if it was given to me for free.
