Right on Dave... what many folk who buy boats don't realise these days is...
Boats are built for 'liveability' thes days... not surviveability...
the markets geared towards comfort/convinience over safety... so Boat of the Year at the Boat Show means nothing more than your wife is gonna say...
"Honey... thats a gorgeous kitchen... you wanna boat... I want that kitchen/sun deck whatever..."
So is it any surprise that the Coastal potterer suddenly feels super confident and takes his 'Boat of the Year' out where neither he nor the boat should go...
Don't blame the Builders or the Designers on this one....
Its your fault... you got what you've clamoured for..... CHIC...
Like a brick....

Re: Spirited 380 Lost in the Coral Sea

Personally I think it would be difficult for anyone to look at the design and location of the engine hatches and not come to the clear conclusion that its flawed. Add to that the number of posters who have sailed the same design and had the same ingress of water it moves from difficult to impossible to believe the design isn't flawed.

What I would be surprised by is if the designer doesn't come to that same conclusion and somehow issue a mandatory redesign before a more tragic accident happens.

Go to any boatshow and ask the question, can i go offshore?
Salesperson replies ohh yeeh? Sort of, depends,
It is hard for the layman to really work out what can handle real offshore.

I like to honor the OP's inquiry whenever possible. In this case, he did not ask for a critique of his boat or his sailplan, but merely asked that any sighting of his lost vessel, or information regarding it, be reported via this forum.

Welcome to the forum, Minx. Let's hope one of our cruisers can help you locate your boat.

Re: Spirited 380 Lost in the Coral Sea

I dont have access to my GPS at the moment, So cant say for sure,

But I think the current from where it sank is south bound, so it should eventually end up on the Great barrier Reef or on a beach further south in OZ,

That south bound current runs approx 4 Knots, and goes through the Coral Sea,
But not sure how far out it is up there.

If it sank.... its going nowhere...
if it was abandoned it could well follow your forecast...

Most modern Multi's dont sink, They float just on the surface,

I hope for their sake it does come ashore,

But will it be worth salvaging after that long in the water,

Mine was an absolute mess after a week, but fortunately for me, it was half on the beach, Not submerged,

Re: Spirited 380 Lost in the Coral Sea

Just looking at the ocean current on the east coast of OZ and in the Coral Sea,

Minx was almost in the centre of it, or a bit to the south of the middle,

Up there, it splits into two, one north and one south,

If the Minx is still floating, and started at 17.20 South, So it is in the south side of the current coming from the east to the west,

It will get spat up onto the outside of the Great Barrier Reef between 17 and 20 degrees South,

about Rockhampton, QLD,

If it gets caught in the north bound current, which I doubt, it will get spat out about 15 to 14 degrees south,

100 miles north of Cooktown, Approx.

or, Any where between the two points, 14 and 20 degrees South.

This is the same knowledge the rescuers use to find lost ships, If they have a sinking position, EPIRB, thats gone off,

Its not that much above the water, so I doubt whether wind will be a factor,

I think "Incinerator" was found months later after capsizing. I saw her & was looking not too shabby considering. Devonhouse Recollections: September 2006

hope the vessel is found & fixed up

We agree that you're unqualified. Heavy = strong isn't neccessarily true. Modern materials mean boats can be light and strong.

And from what I've read, Minx didn't suffer from any structural failure.

Everyone seems to be focussed on the engine hatches, but I'm wondering why both sails (the primary method of propulsion IMO) were blown out in around 30 knots wind on such a new boat.

Re: Spirited 380 Lost in the Coral Sea

I suspect like a lot of these things there is a lot more to this story than what we have so far as facts.

30knots and 4m waves in that vessel should not be an issue.

Not pointing the finger anywhere, but the data we have does not support the level of issue's on board, and let's be realistic, whilst together they may have caused trouble, on their own they could no doubt have been dealt with, but that's an easy thing to say in the light of day, being able to break down and prioritise what to do and in what order in the heat of the moment is not something that a lot of people can do easily.

Was the boat run aground or hit an object damaging the sail drives and causing flooding? (if not shredded sails could have been jury.rigged over the stern hatches minimising the water being taken on board, the engine compartments didn't flood in 30sec with the hatches in place, even if they leaked like a sieve.

As mentioned before, why were the headsail and main on a relatively new boat shredded?

That's not even looking in to the fact that apparently multiple bilge pumps failed?

If the boat is/was still floating that suggests no immediate life threatening danger, much easier for rescue services to locate a large cat than a liferaft etc, suggests panic? But again what led up to that point?

I don't think they abandoned the boat because it was sinking they abandoned because they were in the path of a cyclone and couldn't get out of the way.
