Doghouse: With the curtains rolled up and any breeze at all on the water, the bridgedeck is quite comfortable, and unlike a canvas bimini, heat does not radiate through the top. Several Mainecat 30's have small airconditioners on one or both hulls, but that starts adding weight to a small cat, with severe penalties in performance. I've been comfortable over the Fourth of July with no airconditioning, just because we chose a decent anchorage, with exposure to the prevailing breeze and far enough out to avoid bugs. I have air on my 36 but never use it because it requires the generator to run, a pretty obnoxious circumstance. The boat would be 800# lighter without those two items.

Vegas: I'm curious about you mention of the Maine Cat 30's performance; what were you comparing it to?

I did no direct comparisons. We had one day of beam reaching in around 15 knots. I did not see speeds much over 7 knots. This was with the standard genoa no reacher onboard. The Maine cat 30 has a PHRF rating of 207 which is very similar to a gemini. I really liked the boat but just wanted a bit more performance. I like the look of the Jaz 37 but I have heard mixed reports on the quality of that design.

I sent them an email last week and got no response.
I am not really ready for a fixer-upper at the moment so won't bother them with persistence but would be curious to hear the end result.

And on sort of that same note.
There seems to be no accurate way to find out what a boat actually sold for. Owners won't say and sellers won't either. So I would have no idea what to offer anyone for anything really.
So I am pretty sure I will be screwed by believing something someone I thought I could trust, says.

On my friends Maine Cat 30 in 15 kt.s of wind with full main and screacher we usually see between 8 and 9.5 knots. In 20 knots of wind on a beam reach he had her up to 14 kt.s but felt he was pushing it with full sail up. A.J.

Don't let the open bridgedeck put you off just because it is different. You will have get great breeze while at anchor, 360 degree visibility and the ability to sail/motor in a protected enclosure when it is raining/cold/rough.

FWIW, we lived for a year on the Chesapeake with our Maine Cat 41 and survived pretty well without AC as long as we were AWAY from the dock.
