Sold our home and Boat contract in the same month

Wife and I retired this month and have been planning our new adventure for quite some time. The stars must be in perfect alignment since we just negotiated for a 98 Manta 40 within several weeks of receiving an offer for our home. Our heads are still spinning since we are moving some furniture and other items to Texas from Tn. and the Manta we have under contract is in Charleston. Massive garage sale and just sold one of our cars.

This was the first Manta we had seen and loved the boat. I realize a lot of the newer boats are more open from the settee to the cockpit but they were usually out of budget. We loved the layout of the Manta and really wanted an owners version instead of the typical charter boat layout.

We should be on the boat by mid July if the survey comes back with minor issues. It's amazing how fast you can fill up a house with stuff. We have all the stress of selling a home and buying the boat but eliminating all of the unnecessary possessions seems to have a calming affect.

Time for a huge change from a 3k sq ft home to a 40 ft yacht!

Congratulations and best of luck! What are your plans with all of your household belongings? Are you storing them?

Selling most of it and trying to store just a minimal amount.

A BIG Congrats! and wishing you both years of great experiences in the cruising lifestyle which we know you will have.
Also a great choice for your cruising /sailing platform as we have met many Manta couples over the years, become close with some and the Manta is a proven, solid, comfortable boat.

Thanks Bob

Researched a lot of boats and Catana's were on the list as well. They were usually out of budget. Two things that were must haves were an owners version and pay cash! My engineering background always drove me to the better engineered boats but usually older one to stay in budget.

Congratulations, and a tiny bit of advice on storage - don't store spices, oils, or anything plastic (Tupperware, nylon spatulas, etc.) or wooden (cutting boards, wooden spoons, etc.) that has ever been in contact with food. It WILL attract mice.

After having kept some things in storage for three years, my new rule is "don't". Unless it's some family heirloom that you just can't part with and cannot foist off on a relative or friend, if you don't have a solid plan for it in 3-6 months time, you are better off without it. It took me a long time to learn that lesson.

Congrats!

You will be amazed at how soon your boat, any boat, fills up with sailors' belongings!

We 'empty' ours before every longer adventure. In no time, the space is taken up by new books, clothes and ever more boat stuff...

Sailing life as an exercise in compulsive hoarding and generosity ;-)

Have a good time,
Happy sailing!

Does owner's version mean a mass produced boat in two versions; one variant for charter companies and the other for people who'll own and sail themselves?

I do not believe Manta marketed to the Charter companies. From the research we have done Manta only marketed to the cruisers. However , there are plenty of Manta owners on this forum that would have more knowledge than us if they built a charter version.

Congratulations. We are going on year 3 of owning our 1999 Manta 40. Hull 49.

Love the boat. Continuously learning and upgrading. Hoping to sail off in the next few years! If you make it to SE Florida give us a shout. Make sure to join the Manta owners forum. Everyone is fantastic and helps one another. If you experience an issue you can be pretty certain someone else has as wel. One of the true benefits of owning a Manta! Congratulations again!
