I have to say that looks like a very well designed little boat. Looks like fun. For $8,000 US it is not cheap but would be a lot of fun.

What makes it so nice is that you can bring it with you cruising without adding much weight or taking up too much room.

I once saw a slightly bigger inflatable sailing cat made in some eastern block country. Will try and dig it up again. That was a 3-4 man boat that was way cheaper, something like 3-4 k$

There are two different lines of design of inflatable catamarans. One - catamarans for one day sailing simple for fun. It's SmartCat, VarioCat, HappyLight, Ducky13.
Another line of design - boats for small or long trips - Ducky15,17,19, SibCat, Triton.
Each of these models has some advantages and disadvantages.
I am an owner of one Ducky15 and one Ducky19. If you have questions, please ask.

Re: SmartKat Collapsible Catamaran
This is kind of an old thread but hopefully we can get an update.
I looked at one at a boat show a few months ago. It looked like it was sturdy and very well built. They said I could pick one up for under $6K. It's very tempting. so...
Has anyone sailed or bought a SmartKat yet?

Yup. Smart. Expensivish.
I like them. Looked up their local site but ;-( once we saw the price.
I would like one of them as a dink in those tropical anchorages.

Re: SmartKat Collapsible Catamaran
This is the one the manufactuer gave to Laura Dekker (the 14, now 16 year old solo sailing Dutch girl that currently is heading towards the Red Sea), after she learned to sail it, then demo'ed it on countless occasions at a boat show, they became a sponsor, giving her one. Now I know that I don't have Laura's sailing skill, she dialed into this inflatable cat so quick that she was flying a hull in no time. If you buy from her web site, she gets a cut, then she donates part of that to Sea Shepard for whale protection. She is quite a girl.

She may be quite a girl, but if she is bamboozled by that criminal posing as a "conservationist", Paul Watson, I can guarantee regardless of the attributes of that boat, I would never buy through her site.
Watson, a founder of Greenpeace, quit them because they were not "radical enough". Sea Shepard was his new method of milking money from the uninitiated and naive.

Re: SmartKat Collapsible Catamaran
avb3,
Ouch, you have strong feelings concerning the goals of Sea Shepard. But back on topic, I know the pictures are not very good, but I think Laura has less than 10 hours sailing the mini-cat when these pictures were taken, and as I said, she is uncanny in her ability to dial in what ever she sails. She used to have a 27 foot boat she was very comfortable sailing but her government insisted that she up size. She did to a 36', and even with a different sail plan, she dialed in to its characteristics quickly and set off on her solo circum. Like I said, "quite a girl".
