Rubbish
Using your same logic if it has two wings it must be a plane

or if it has two wheels it must be a bike?

Some significant differences between a cat and a proa. Proas have bows at each end, rudders too, and they don't tack, they shunt - reverse direction. One hull is the intended to always be the windward, the other the leeward.

Re: Slightly beached

There are three styles of Proa (that I know of) . Atlantic Pacific and Harryproa. As Dave said they are very different to Cats, they have unique handling characteristics. They can be built (in the case of the Harryproa at least), ridiculously cheap.

One time worls speed record holder Yellow Pages Endeavour was a proa, albeit with three hulls.

Atlantic Proa is basically a tri without the windward ama. The ama is to lee, the rig and biggest volume and weight is to Windward. Basically invented by Dick Newick.

Pacific Proa has ama to Windward. Rig and accommodation to leeward. Pacific Proa is probably the first multihull ever made.

Harryproa - Rig and rudders in long hull to leeward, Accommodation in short hull to windward.

I think the harry proa is a highly sensible design.

So no Port & Starboard? No Bow & Stern? How the hell do you tell your wife where something is? "It's in the big hull lazarette!" "Which one?" "The forward one!" "Not that one, the other one!" "This was the forward one last time!" "Yeah, but we're on a left tack now."

Re: Slightly beached

I guess you can't say you were sailing dead downwind anymore either because dead downwind is also in irons. You'd need a little diamond shape on the GPS display instead of an arrow, wouldn't you?

Confined to the correct context, ausaviator is on the money. It's a sailing vessel with 2 hulls so it is a cat.

A cycle with 1 wheel is a monocycle, 2 a bicycle, 3 a tricycle and so on. A trolley is never any kind of cycle and a Pennyfarthing is still a bicycle even though the wheels are different sizes.

Regardless, that cat looks like its been beaten by the ugly stick a few too many times 😃

You are wrong as has been shown repeatedly above. (post 18 and 19)

There is no context where a Cat is a proa or vice versa. None. But whatever.

han's new boat is definitly a catamaran,or ethnic voyaging canoe as he calls it,with the mast towards the bow,and not reversing bow for stern when tacking ,even if one hull is slightly longer than the other.

Re: Slightly beached

Definition of CATAMARAN

: a vessel (as a sailboat) with twin hulls and usually a deck or superstructure connecting the hulls

Origin of CATAMARAN

Tamil kaṭṭumaram, from kaṭṭu to tie + maram tree, wood First Known Use: 1673

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/catamaran

Therefore I would say that this Proa at least is a Catamaran (as well as being a Proa) - English is an ever evolving language, obviously the word Catamaran now applies to a very different style (and mix) of vessels to which it originally described but nonetheless two hulls joined together = Catamaran. A Pro may be argued as sub set of the catamaran species, but not (yet?) evolved into own species.....

Also apparently an informal term for a quarrelsome woman (age of woman not specified ).

catamaran - definition of catamaran by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.
