Since when do surveyors NOT go up the mast and NOT inspect the sails and rigging?

Yesterday in Fort Lauderdale I was aboard for survey of a 45ft Leopard. He said surveyors are forbidden by insurance from going up the mast. Has anyone head or seen this?

Urgent as purchase is on hold!

Can anybody recommend a rigging company who CAN go inspect the mast and rigging in Pompano beach, Fl?

Extremely rare is a surveyor who goes aloft...

Three distinct disciplines...

1. General-Overall survey

2. Rigging Survey

3. Machinery/Engine Survey

Recently had a boat surveyed in Lauderdale. He did go up the mast.

Note to other readers... This is something that you should make clear with your surveyor BEFORE the survey.

you should post the survey on here.
I did and the community pointed out all of its shortcomings.
It's good to see another set of eyes when dropping large sums of money.

I am fairly certain my surveyor did not climb the mast.

We recently purchased a IP 38 and had an awesome surveyor. Neil Hayes, Bluewater Survey (nhaynes@boatsurveyor.com)out of Charleston, SC. He goes up the mast and traveled to ft. Lauderdale for a survey of IP 45 which we did not purchase thanks to survey by Neil that was so thorough. Neil is fantastic as goes thru every nook.

Good advice. Unfortunately a lot of buyers might just assume (very logically so) that a rig inspection should be part of a sailboat survey and not ask until too late.

Of course not doing a rig survey to me is insane but when I was a yacht broker in south Florida and dealt with a lot of surveys I only found one guy that would go up the mast.

When I bought my last boat I couldn't find a surveyor in NY that would go up the mast so I did it myself. FYI he gave risk, liability and insurance as reasons why he didn't go up the mast. And to be fair, the surveyor I used to use in Ft Lauderdale did indeed fall, land on the yacht broker and got sued. Them some might consider landing a yacht broker's head to be a good thing.

Doing a rig survey isn't really rocket science. Take a Scotch Brite scrubbing pad or something similar and a magnifying glass. Go to each swage fitting, polish to a bright shine and inspect very closely with the glass for any cracks, splits or imperfections. Look closely at any rust areas. Do the same for all the tangs on the mast, toggles and turnbuckles on the rigging. On the way up and down look at all the wires for rusty areas or damage. If any concern run your hand up each wire to feel for fishhooks. Don't forget to take band-aids to stop the resulting blood or wear some gloves.

Not usually an issue but you should probably check the mast as well. Look for any damage, kinks, bends, major corrosion, etc.

Two Leopards needing a rig survey in that general market? Anyway, might want to check out this thread with a fair number of names/numbers:

Always ask about this before you hire a surveyor. I had one guy say that he did the rig inspection from the deck with binoculars. Laughable!

In fact, one can make a good case for having a rigger do a rig survey separate from the general survey of the vessel.

I didn't have my rigging surveyed, I honestly think it's original and made my offer based on having it replaced.
I think there are many more boats than we realize out there with original rigging.

Florida Hydraulics and Rigging or Mack Sails as a place to start.

Defiently get it done. I blew it off on last purchase and it was a mistake. :-)

Re: Since when do surveyors NOT go up the mast and NOT inspect the sails and rigging?

The two times I've looked for surveyors I've found this exact thing... the general surveyor will do #1, the deck level portion of #2 (including visually inspecting standing rigging where it attaches to chain plates etc, running rigging that's on deck level and a visual inspection of sails) and start the motor, then recommend I find someone to do #2 and #3 completely...

This. #1 is commonly called a hull survey.

I've never heard of a marine surveyor going up a mast.

We just had a survey on our 43 ft cat. The surveyor went aloft and checked out all the rigging. The best rigger in South Florida is Christian Dam of Dam Rigging. Dam Rigging
